> The asphalt calculator estimates the hot-mix asphalt for a driveway, path or parking area from its size and compacted thickness, as volume and tonnage, and works out the cost per ton.

## Inputs

- Length (ft, m, in, yd, cm)
- Width (ft, m, in, yd, cm)
- Compacted thickness (in, cm, mm, ft, m)
- Asphalt density (kg/m³, lb/ft³, g/cm³, lb/yd³)
- Waste (%)
- Price (/US ton, /t, /lb, /kg)

## Results

- Area
- Volume
- Asphalt needed
- Cost

## Formula

```
Volume = L × W × thickness
Weight = volume × density (≈ 2,243 kg/m³ or 145 lb/ft³ compacted)
Cost = weight × (1 + waste) × price per ton
```

## Explanation

Asphalt is bought by the ton but laid by area and thickness. Residential driveways typically get 2–3 in of compacted hot-mix asphalt over 4–8 in of compacted aggregate base; parking lots and roads carry more. Compacted asphalt weighs about 145 lb per cubic foot – about 110 lb per square yard per inch of thickness.

### How to use the Asphalt Calculator

- **Length**
- **Width**
- **Compacted thickness**
- **Asphalt density**
- **Waste**
- **Price**
- Every result field is editable: type into **Asphalt needed** and **Compacted thickness** plus every other field update to match.

Results update as you type, and every field accepts the units shown in its menu.

### How it works

Enter the length, width and compacted thickness, the density of the mix, waste and the price per ton. The calculator returns the area, volume, tonnage and cost.

### Tips for an accurate estimate

- Plan driveways and paths in layers – a compacted base of larger stone does most of the structural work.
- Add 10–25% for compaction: loose stone shrinks once it is rolled or driven on.
- Ask the quarry whether prices are per US ton, metric tonne or cubic yard before comparing quotes.
- Grade surfaces at 1–2% so water runs off rather than soaking into the base.

### Common mistakes to avoid

- Skipping the base layer or geotextile on soft soil, which leads to ruts and potholes.
- Using rounded stone (pea gravel, river rock) on surfaces that carry vehicles.
- Ordering compacted volume when the supplier delivers loose material.

### What each result means

- **Area** = [Length]×[Width]
- **Volume** = [Length]×[Width]×[Compacted thickness]
- **Asphalt needed** = [Volume]×[Asphalt density]×(1 + [Waste]÷100)
- **Cost** = [Asphalt needed]×[Price]

### Example values

How the main result changes when **Compacted thickness** changes and everything else stays at the example values above:

## Worked example

Inputs — Length: 50 ft; Width: 12 ft; Compacted thickness: 3 in; Asphalt density: 2,243 kg/m³; Waste: 5 %; Price: $100 /US ton.

Results — Area = 600 ft²; Volume = 5.56 yd³; **Asphalt needed = 11.03 US ton**; Cost = $1,102.70.

## FAQ

**How many tons of asphalt do I need?**
About 0.055 US tons per square yard per inch (110 lb). A 12 × 50 ft driveway at 3 in needs about 11 tons.

**How thick should an asphalt driveway be?**
2–3 in compacted for cars over a good base; 3–4 in for heavier traffic.

**What is the density of asphalt?**
140–150 lb/ft³ (2,240–2,400 kg/m³) compacted.

**What formula does the Asphalt Calculator use?**
Volume = L × W × thickness.
