> The box fill calculator applies NEC 314.16 to find the minimum electrical box volume in cubic inches for the conductors, clamps, fittings, devices and grounding wires inside, and checks a box you already have.

## Inputs

- 18 AWG conductors
- 16 AWG conductors
- 14 AWG conductors
- 12 AWG conductors
- 10 AWG conductors
- 8 AWG conductors
- 6 AWG conductors
- Internal cable clamps
- Fittings (luminaire studs, hickeys)
- Devices (switches, receptacles)
- Equipment grounding conductors
- Your box volume (optional) (in³, cm³)

## Results

- Required box volume
- Fill of your box

## Formula

```
Volume = Σ conductors × allowance for their AWG size
+ 1 allowance (largest) for all clamps, + 1 per fitting, + 2 per device yoke, + 1 for grounds (¼ each beyond four)
Allowances (in³): 18 AWG 1.50, 16 AWG 1.75, 14 AWG 2.00, 12 AWG 2.25, 10 AWG 2.50, 8 AWG 3.00, 6 AWG 5.00
```

## Explanation

Overfilled boxes make splices hard, damage insulation and overheat. The U.S. National Electrical Code assigns each item a volume allowance based on conductor size: every insulated conductor entering the box counts once, all internal cable clamps together count once, each switch or receptacle yoke counts twice and all equipment grounding conductors together count once.

### How to use the Box Fill Calculator

- **18 AWG conductors**
- **16 AWG conductors**
- **14 AWG conductors**
- **12 AWG conductors**
- **10 AWG conductors**
- **8 AWG conductors**
- **6 AWG conductors**
- **Internal cable clamps**
- **Fittings (luminaire studs, hickeys)**
- **Devices (switches, receptacles)**
- **Equipment grounding conductors**
- **Your box volume (optional)**

Results update as you type, and every field accepts the units shown in its menu.

### How it works

Enter the number of conductors of each gauge, whether the box has internal clamps, the number of fittings and devices and grounding conductors, and optionally your box's marked volume.

### Conductor volume allowances (NEC Table 314.16(B))

### Tips for an accurate estimate

- Keep units consistent – the calculator handles conversions, but check every field's unit before reading a result.
- Use values from standards, data sheets or test pieces whenever you have them; typical values are only a starting point.
- Apply appropriate safety factors and have structural, electrical and pressure work checked by a qualified professional.
- Record the inputs you used so the calculation can be reviewed later.

### Common mistakes to avoid

- Confusing diameter and radius, or nominal and actual sizes.
- Using allowable stresses and ultimate strengths interchangeably.
- Treating rule-of-thumb results as a substitute for code tables or an engineered design.

## Worked example

Inputs — 18 AWG conductors: 0; 16 AWG conductors: 0; 14 AWG conductors: 4; 12 AWG conductors: 0; 10 AWG conductors: 0; 8 AWG conductors: 0; 6 AWG conductors: 0; Internal cable clamps: Yes; Fittings (luminaire studs, hickeys): 0; Devices (switches, receptacles): 1; Equipment grounding conductors: 2; Your box volume (optional): 18 in³.

Results — **Required box volume = 16 in³**; Fill of your box = 89 %.

## FAQ

**How do I calculate box fill?**
Add the NEC 314.16(B) allowances: each conductor by gauge, one for all clamps, two per device, one per fitting and one for all grounds.

**Do pigtails count toward box fill?**
No – conductors that start and end inside the box (pigtails) are not counted.

**Does a 14 AWG ground count?**
All equipment grounding conductors together count as one allowance of the largest one; under NEC 2020, add ¼ allowance for each beyond four.

**What formula does the Box Fill Calculator use?**
Volume = Σ conductors × allowance for their AWG size.
