Plate is sold in standard sheet sizes (4 × 8 ft, 5 × 10 ft, 1250 × 2500 mm and so on), and its weight decides the freight cost and how you will lift it. The calculator works for one plate or a stack and also gives the weight per square foot and square metre, the usual figure in steel tables.
How to use the Plate Weight Calculator
- Metal
- Custom density
- Plate length
- Plate width
- Thickness
- Number of plates
- Every result field is editable: type into Weight of one plate or any other result and Thickness plus every other field update to match.
Results update as you type, and every field accepts the units shown in its menu.
How it works
Choose the metal, enter the plate length, width and thickness, and the number of plates. The volume of one plate is multiplied by the metal density to give its weight.
Steel plate weights
| Thickness | lb/ft² | kg/m² |
|---|---|---|
| 10 ga (0.1345 in) | 5.49 | 26.8 |
| 3/16 in | 7.66 | 37.4 |
| 1/4 in | 10.21 | 49.8 |
| 3/8 in | 15.32 | 74.8 |
| 1/2 in | 20.42 | 99.7 |
| 3/4 in | 30.63 | 149.5 |
| 1 in | 40.84 | 199.4 |
Tips for an accurate estimate
- Sketch the job and split irregular areas into rectangles, circles and triangles before you measure.
- Add a waste allowance – typically 5–10% for simple layouts and 15–20% for diagonal, curved or heavily cut work.
- Check the coverage or yield printed on the product, because sizes and densities vary between manufacturers.
- Buy all units of a finished material (tile, brick, siding) from the same batch so colours match, and keep a few spares for repairs.
- Confirm local prices – quarry, lumber and steel prices vary widely by region and season.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Ordering exactly the calculated amount with no allowance for breakage, offcuts and settlement.
- Forgetting to subtract doors, windows and other openings – or subtracting small ones that still need cutting around.
- Confusing US short tons (2,000 lb) with metric tonnes (1,000 kg) when comparing quotes.

What each result means
- Area of one plate = [Plate length]×[Plate width]
- Total weight = [Weight of one plate]×[Number of plates]
Formula
Weight = length × width × thickness × density × quantityWorked example
Inputs — Metal: Steel, carbon / mild; Custom density: 7,850 kg/m³; Plate length: 8 ft; Plate width: 4 ft; Thickness: 0.25 in; Number of plates: 1.
Results — Area of one plate = 32 ft²; Weight of one plate = 326.71 lb; Total weight = 326.71 lb; Weight per unit area = 10.21 lb/ft².
Frequently asked questions
How much does a 4 × 8 sheet of ¼-inch steel weigh?
About 327 lb (148 kg): 32 ft² × 10.2 lb/ft².
How do I find plate weight per square foot?
Multiply thickness in inches by 40.84 for steel or by 14.0 for aluminium.
What is gauge?
Sheet-metal gauge numbers are thicknesses; 10 gauge steel is about 0.1345 in, 16 gauge about 0.0598 in.
What formula does the Plate Weight Calculator use?
Weight = length × width × thickness × density × quantity.
