> The byte converter converts data size between bytes, kilobytes, megabytes, terabytes, kibibytes, mebibytes and more. Choose any “from” and “to” unit, type a number into any field and every other unit updates instantly; all conversion factors are exact definitions.

## Inputs

- From (GB, B, bit, kB, MB, TB, PB, KiB, MiB, GiB, TiB, kbit, Mbit, Gbit)

## Results

- To
- Kilobytes
- Megabytes
- Terabytes
- Kibibytes
- Mebibytes
- Gibibytes

## Formula

```
1 GB = 1 × 10^9 B
1 GB = 1,000,000 kB
1 GB = 1,000 MB
1 GB = 0.001 TB
1 GB = 976,562.5 KiB
```

## Explanation

Storage makers use decimal prefixes (1 GB = 1,000,000,000 bytes) while operating systems often count in binary units (1 GiB = 1,073,741,824 bytes). That is why a “500 GB” drive shows up as about 465 GiB. This converter shows both systems side by side.

### How to use the Byte Converter

- Pick the unit you are starting from in the **From** menu and type your value.
- Pick the unit you want in the **To** menu. The heading changes to match – for example “Gigabytes to Bytes Converter”.
- The most common data size units are shown below at the same time, so you can compare them at a glance.
- Type into any result to convert backwards, then use **Copy results** – the copied text starts with the heading for your chosen units.

Results update as you type. Everything is calculated in your browser.

### How it works

Every data size unit is defined by an exact factor relative to the byte (the base unit). The calculator first turns the value you type into bytes, then turns that into the unit you picked in the “To” menu and into each of the common units below it. This two-step method means any unit can be converted to any other – 14 units are available in each menu – and you can type into any field, including a result, to work in the other direction. Changing a unit menu keeps the quantity the same and just re-expresses it, and the page heading and copied results follow your choice.

### How to convert data size units

- Choose the unit you have in the **From** menu and type the value, for example **1 GB**.
- Choose the unit you want in the **To** menu, for example bytes. The page heading changes to “Gigabytes to Bytes Converter”.
- The calculator multiplies by the byte factor of the “from” unit and divides by the factor of the “to” unit: 1 GB × 1 × 109 ÷ 1 = **1 × 109 B**.

### What is a gigabyte?

A gigabyte is 1,000,000,000 bytes (SI). Phone storage and data plans are measured in GB.

### What is a byte?

A byte is 8 bits, enough to store one character of plain English text.

### What is a kilobyte?

A kilobyte is 1,000 bytes in SI units. Some software uses “KB” for 1,024 bytes, properly called a kibibyte (KiB).

### Common mistakes to avoid

Mixing decimal units (1 gb = 10⁹ bytes) with binary units (1 gib = 2³⁰ bytes), and bits with bytes.

## Worked example

Inputs — From: 1 GB.

Results — **To = 1,000,000,000 B**; Kilobytes = 1,000,000 kB; Megabytes = 1,000 MB; Terabytes = 0.001 TB; Kibibytes = 976,562.5 KiB; Mebibytes = 953.67431641 MiB; Gibibytes = 0.93132257 GiB.

## FAQ

**Why does my 1 TB drive show 931 GB?**
The drive holds 10¹² bytes; the computer divides by 2⁴⁰ and labels the result “GB”, giving about 931 GiB.

**How many MB in a GB?**
1,000 MB (decimal) or 1,024 MiB per GiB (binary).

**How many bits in a byte?**
8.

**How do I change the units?**
Pick any unit in the From and To menus. The value is converted in place, and the heading changes to show your conversion, for example “Gigabytes to Bytes Converter”.

**Can I type into any field?**
Yes. Every field is editable, so you can start from whichever unit you have.

**How many units can I convert between?**
14 data size units, from the everyday to the specialised.

**Which units are exact?**
All factors here are exact by definition except astronomical and similar reference values, which use internationally agreed constants.

**What formula does the Byte Converter use?**
1 GB = 1 × 10^9 B.
