> The density converter converts density between grams per cubic centimetre, kilograms per litre, pounds per cubic foot, pounds per cubic yard, pounds per US gallon, pounds per cubic inch and more. Choose any “from” and “to” unit, type a number into any field and every other unit updates instantly; all conversion factors are exact definitions.

## Inputs

- From (kg/m³, g/cm³, kg/dm³, g/mL, kg/L, lb/ft³, lb/yd³, lb/in³, lb/US gal, oz/in³)

## Results

- To
- Kilograms per litre
- Pounds per cubic foot
- Pounds per cubic yard
- Pounds per US gallon
- Pounds per cubic inch
- Specific gravity (vs water at 4 °C)

## Formula

```
1 kg/m³ = 0.001 g/cm³
1 kg/m³ = 0.001 kg/L
1 kg/m³ = 0.062427961 lb/ft³
1 kg/m³ = 1.6855549 lb/yd³
1 kg/m³ = 0.0083454045 lb/US gal
```

## Explanation

Density links mass and volume. Water is about 1,000 kg/m³ (1 g/cm³, 62.4 lb/ft³, 8.345 lb per U.S. gallon), which makes it a handy reference when converting other densities.

### How to use the Density Converter

- Pick the unit you are starting from in the **From** menu and type your value.
- Pick the unit you want in the **To** menu. The heading changes to match – for example “Kilograms per Cubic Meter to Grams per Cubic Centimeter Converter”.
- The most common density units are shown below at the same time, so you can compare them at a glance.
- Type into any result to convert backwards, then use **Copy results** – the copied text starts with the heading for your chosen units.

Results update as you type. Everything is calculated in your browser.

### How it works

Every density unit is defined by an exact factor relative to the kilogram per cubic metre (the base unit). The calculator first turns the value you type into kilograms per cubic metre, then turns that into the unit you picked in the “To” menu and into each of the common units below it. This two-step method means any unit can be converted to any other – 10 units are available in each menu – and you can type into any field, including a result, to work in the other direction. Changing a unit menu keeps the quantity the same and just re-expresses it, and the page heading and copied results follow your choice.

### How to convert density units

- Choose the unit you have in the **From** menu and type the value, for example **1,000 kg/m³**.
- Choose the unit you want in the **To** menu, for example grams per cubic centimetre. The page heading changes to “Kilograms per Cubic Meter to Grams per Cubic Centimeter Converter”.
- The calculator multiplies by the kilogram per cubic metre factor of the “from” unit and divides by the factor of the “to” unit: 1,000 kg/m³ × 1 ÷ 1,000 = **1 g/cm³**.

## Worked example

Inputs — From: 1,000 kg/m³.

Results — **To = 1 g/cm³**; Kilograms per litre = 1 kg/L; Pounds per cubic foot = 62.42796058 lb/ft³; Pounds per cubic yard = 1,685.55493556 lb/yd³; Pounds per US gallon = 8.34540445 lb/US gal; Pounds per cubic inch = 0.03612729 lb/in³; Specific gravity (vs water at 4 °C) = 1.

## FAQ

**What is the density of water?**
About 1,000 kg/m³ at 4 °C, 998 kg/m³ at 20 °C.

**How many lb/ft³ is 1 g/cm³?**
About 62.43 lb/ft³.

**Is specific gravity the same as density?**
Specific gravity is density divided by the density of water, so it has no units.

**How do I change the units?**
Pick any unit in the From and To menus. The value is converted in place, and the heading changes to show your conversion, for example “Kilograms per Cubic Meter to Grams per Cubic Centimeter Converter”.

**Can I type into any field?**
Yes. Every field is editable, so you can start from whichever unit you have.

**How many units can I convert between?**
10 density units, from the everyday to the specialised.

**Which units are exact?**
All factors here are exact by definition except astronomical and similar reference values, which use internationally agreed constants.

**What formula does the Density Converter use?**
1 kg/m³ = 0.001 g/cm³.
