> This calculator finds the work done (in joules) when a force in newtons moves an object a distance in metres, and explains why a newton-metre of torque is not the same thing as a joule of energy.

## Inputs

- Force (N, kN, lbf, kgf)
- Distance moved (m, km, cm, mm, in, ft, yd)

## Results

- Work (energy)

## Formula

```
W = F × d   (1 J = 1 N × 1 m)
```

## Explanation

A joule is the work done by a force of one newton acting through one metre. Torque is also measured in newton-metres, but there the force is perpendicular to the lever arm and nothing moves along it, so physicists write torque as N·m and keep joules for energy.

### How to use the Newton Meters to Joules Calculator

- **Force**
- **Distance moved**
- Every result field is editable: type into **Work (energy)** and **Distance moved** plus every other field update to match.

Results update as you type, and every field accepts the units shown in its menu.

### How it works

The force is multiplied by the distance moved in the direction of the force.

### Inputs explained

FieldWhat to enterForceUnits: N, kN, lbf, kgfDistance movedUnits: m, km, cm, mm, in, ft …

### Example values

How the main result changes when **Distance moved** changes and everything else stays at the example values above:

Distance moved (m)Work (energy) (J)1501.57521002.512531504200

## Worked example

Inputs — Force: 50 N; Distance moved: 2 m.

Results — **Work (energy) = 100 J**.

## FAQ

**Is 1 N·m equal to 1 J?**
Numerically yes, but by convention N·m is used for torque and J for energy or work.

**How much work is lifting 10 kg by 1 m?**
About 98 J (10 kg × 9.81 m/s² × 1 m).

**What formula does the Newton Meters to Joules Calculator use?**
W = F × d   (1 J = 1 N × 1 m).
