## Formula

```
I = 1, V = 5, X = 10, L = 50, C = 100, D = 500, M = 1000
A smaller symbol before a larger one is subtracted: IV = 4, IX = 9, XL = 40, XC = 90, CD = 400, CM = 900
```

## Explanation

Roman numerals are still used for clock faces, book chapters, film copyright years, monarchs, Super Bowls and event names. Standard form uses at most three repeats of a symbol and six subtractive pairs.

### How to use the Roman Numerals Converter

- **Direction**
- **Value**

Everything runs in your browser, so results appear instantly and nothing you type is sent to a server.

### How it works

Numbers are written by taking the largest symbol or subtractive pair that fits, repeatedly. Roman input is validated against the standard pattern before it is read.

## Worked example

Inputs — Direction: Number → Roman numerals; Value: 2026.

Results — **Result = MMXXVI**; Breakdown = M=1000 + M=1000 + X=10 + X=10 + V=5 + I=1.

## FAQ

**Why stop at 3,999?**
Standard Roman numerals have no symbol above M; larger numbers used a bar meaning ×1,000.

**Is IIII ever correct?**
It appears on many clock faces, but IV is the standard form.

**Is there a Roman zero?**
No; the Romans had no numeral for zero.

**What formula does the Roman Numerals Converter use?**
I = 1, V = 5, X = 10, L = 50, C = 100, D = 500, M = 1000.
