GVWR Calculator

Quick answer

The GVWR calculator finds a vehicle's gross vehicle weight rating from its tare (empty) weight and rated payload, and checks how much payload is left with your passengers and cargo.

Gross vehicle weight rating
—
Payload remaining
—
Payload used
— %

The gross vehicle weight rating is the maximum the vehicle may weigh fully loaded, set by the manufacturer from the strength of its axles, tyres, brakes and frame. It is printed on the door-jamb sticker. Exceeding it is illegal in many places and unsafe – braking distances grow and tyres can fail.

How to use the GVWR Calculator

  1. Tare (curb) weight
  2. Rated payload
  3. Planned load (people, cargo, tongue weight)

Results update as you type, and every field accepts the units shown in its menu.

How it works

Enter the tare weight and the rated payload (or read both from the sticker) and the weight of the people and cargo you plan to carry, including any trailer tongue weight.

Tips

  • Use your own measured figures – fuel economy, speed and prices vary a lot with driving style, traffic, load and season.
  • Pick the unit in each field’s menu (miles or kilometres, mpg or L/100 km); the calculator converts everything for you.
  • Fill up to the brim twice and divide the distance by the fuel added to measure real fuel economy.
  • For vehicle modifications, treat results as a starting point and confirm with the parts maker or a professional mechanic.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Mixing US and imperial (UK) gallons – a UK gallon is about 20% bigger.
  • Using the advertised fuel economy instead of real-world figures.
  • Forgetting tolls, parking and wear and tear when comparing driving with public transport.

Inputs explained

Field What to enter
Tare (curb) weight Units: lb, kg, g, oz
Rated payload Units: lb, kg, g, oz
Planned load (people, cargo, tongue weight) Units: lb, kg, g, oz

What each result means

  • Gross vehicle weight rating = [Tare (curb) weight] + [Rated payload]
  • Payload remaining = [Rated payload] – [Planned load (people, cargo, tongue weight)]
  • Payload used = [Planned load (people, cargo, tongue weight)]÷[Rated payload]×100

Example values

How the main result changes when Tare changes and everything else stays at the example values above:

Tare (curb) weight (lb) Gross vehicle weight rating (lb)
2,250 4,050
3,375 5,175
4,500 6,300
5,625 7,425
6,750 8,550
9,000 10,800

Formula

GVWR = tare weight + rated payloadRemaining payload = rated payload − (passengers + cargo + accessories)

Worked example

Inputs — Tare (curb) weight: 4,500 lb; Rated payload: 1,800 lb; Planned load (people, cargo, tongue weight): 1,200 lb.
Results — Gross vehicle weight rating = 6,300 lb; Payload remaining = 600 lb; Payload used = 67 %.

Key terms

GCWR
Gross combined weight rating – the maximum weight of the vehicle plus trailer.

Frequently asked questions

Where do I find my GVWR?

On the tyre and loading information sticker in the driver's door jamb, and in the owner's manual.

Does GVWR include a trailer?

It includes the trailer's tongue weight on the hitch but not the trailer itself – that is covered by the gross combined weight rating (GCWR).

What happens if I exceed GVWR?

Longer braking distances, overheated brakes, tyre failures and possible fines and insurance problems.

What formula does the GVWR Calculator use?

GVWR = tare weight + rated payload.
