> The paper thickness calculator finds the thickness (caliper) of one sheet of paper from the height of a stack and the number of sheets, in points, mils, millimetres and microns, and the stack height for any sheet count.

## Inputs

- Stack thickness (mm, cm, in)
- Number of sheets

## Results

- Thickness of one sheet
- Height of a 500-sheet ream

## Formula

```
Sheet thickness = stack thickness ÷ number of sheets
1 point (pt) = 1 mil = 0.001 in = 25.4 µm
```

## Explanation

Paper thickness, or caliper, is measured in points (thousandths of an inch) in the U.S. and in microns elsewhere. Ordinary copy paper is about 4 pt (0.1 mm); business cards are 14–16 pt. Measuring a whole ream and dividing is far more accurate than measuring one sheet.

### How to use the Paper Thickness Calculator

- **Stack thickness**
- **Number of sheets**
- Every result field is editable: type into **Thickness of one sheet** and **Stack thickness** plus every other field update to match.

Results update as you type, and every field accepts the units shown in its menu.

### How it works

Measure the height of a stack and count the sheets (a ream is 500). Type a sheet thickness into the result to find the height of the stack.

### Tips

- Track a typical week before planning – real figures beat estimates.
- Break big tasks into smaller pieces and plan buffer time for interruptions.
- Re-run the numbers when your inputs change so plans stay realistic.
- Use results as a guide for decisions, not as a precise prediction.

### Common mistakes to avoid

- Counting calendar days when the deadline is in working days (or the reverse).
- Forgetting breaks, setup and handover time.
- Assuming every day is as productive as your best day.

### What each result means

- **Thickness of one sheet** = [Stack thickness]÷[Number of sheets]
- **Height of a 500-sheet ream** = [Thickness of one sheet]×500

### Example values

How the main result changes when **Stack thickness** changes and everything else stays at the example values above:

Stack thickness (mm)Thickness of one sheet (pt (mil))251.9737.52.95503.9462.54.92755.911007.87

## Worked example

Inputs — Stack thickness: 50 mm; Number of sheets: 500.

Results — **Thickness of one sheet = 3.94 pt (mil)**; Height of a 500-sheet ream = 50 mm.

## FAQ

**How thick is a sheet of printer paper?**
About 0.1 mm (4 pt) for 20 lb / 75–80 gsm copy paper.

**How thick is cardstock?**
8–14 pt (0.2–0.36 mm) depending on weight.

**How many times can you fold paper?**
Folding doubles the thickness each time; 42 folds would in theory reach the Moon.

**What formula does the Paper Thickness Calculator use?**
Sheet thickness = stack thickness ÷ number of sheets.
