Pleats fold extra fabric behind the visible part of the skirt. A knife pleat is a single fold in one direction; a box pleat folds fabric away on both sides of a flat panel. The more pleats and the deeper they are, the more fabric you need – a fully pleated skirt typically uses three times the waist measurement.
How to use the Pleated Skirt Calculator
- Pleat type
- Waist
- Number of pleats
- Skirt length
- Hem allowance
- Seam allowance
- Waistband height (finished)
- Waistband overlap
Results update as you type, and every field accepts the units shown in its menu.
How it works
Choose the pleat type, enter the waist, number of pleats, desired skirt length, hem, seam allowance, waistband height and overlap.
Tips
- Measure over thin clothing with a soft tape held snug but not tight, and keep the tape level all the way round.
- Take each measurement twice; if you are between sizes, the larger size is usually the safer choice.
- Size charts vary by brand and country – check the maker’s own chart when it is available.
- For sewing projects, pre-wash fabric before cutting and buy 10% extra for shrinkage, pattern matching and mistakes.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Mixing inches and centimetres between the tape and the size chart.
- Forgetting seam and hem allowances when cutting fabric.
- Measuring an old, stretched garment instead of your body.
Inputs explained
| Field | What to enter |
|---|---|
| Pleat type | Choose one: Knife pleats (3× fabric), Box pleats (3× fabric), Shallow knife pleats (2× fabric) |
| Waist | Units: in, cm |
| Number of pleats | A number |
| Skirt length | Units: in, cm |
| Hem allowance | Units: in, cm |
| Seam allowance | Units: in, cm |
| Waistband height (finished) | Units: in, cm |
| Waistband overlap | Units: in, cm |
What each result means
- Fabric for one pleat = [Waist]÷[Number of pleats]×round([Pleat type])
- Skirt fabric width = [Fabric for one pleat]×[Number of pleats] + 2×[Seam allowance]
- Skirt fabric length = [Skirt length] + [Hem allowance] + [Seam allowance]
- Waistband length = [Waist] + [Waistband overlap] + 2×[Seam allowance]
- Waistband width to cut = 2×[Waistband height (finished)] + 2×[Seam allowance]
- Visible width of each pleat at the waist = [Waist]÷[Number of pleats]
Example values
How the main result changes when Waist changes and everything else stays at the example values above:
| Waist (in) | Skirt fabric width (in) |
|---|---|
| 14 | 43.3 |
| 21 | 64.3 |
| 28 | 85.3 |
| 35 | 106.3 |
| 42 | 127.3 |
| 56 | 169.3 |
Formula
Fabric per pleat = waist ÷ pleats × 3 (knife) or × 3 (box, with two folds)Skirt fabric width = fabric per pleat × pleats + 2 × seam allowanceSkirt fabric length = length + hem + seam allowanceWaistband = (waist + overlap + 2 × seam) × (2 × band height + 2 × seam)Worked example
Inputs — Pleat type: Knife pleats (3× fabric); Waist: 28 in; Number of pleats: 16; Skirt length: 20 in; Hem allowance: 1.5 in; Seam allowance: 0.625 in; Waistband height (finished): 1.25 in; Waistband overlap: 1 in.
Results — Fabric for one pleat = 5.25 in; Skirt fabric width = 85.3 in; Skirt fabric length = 22.1 in; Waistband length = 30.2 in; Waistband width to cut = 3.75 in; Visible width of each pleat at the waist = 1.75 in.
Frequently asked questions
How much fabric for a pleated skirt?
About three times your waist measurement in width for full knife or box pleats, plus seams.
How do I space pleats evenly?
Divide the waist by the number of pleats for the visible width, and mark each pleat at three times that on the fabric.
What fabric holds pleats best?
Wool, polyester blends and other fabrics that take a crisp press; cotton pleats soften with washing.
What formula does the Pleated Skirt Calculator use?
Fabric per pleat = waist ÷ pleats × 3 (knife) or × 3 (box, with two folds).
