Tie Length Calculator

Quick answer

The tie length calculator recommends a necktie length – short, standard or extra long – from your height, collar size and the knot you use, so the tip lands at your belt buckle.

A tied tie should end at the top of the belt buckle. Standard ties are about 57–58 in long, which suits most men of average height with a four-in-hand knot. Taller men, larger necks and bigger knots like the Windsor use more length, so they need extra-long ties of 61–63 in.

How to use the Tie Length Calculator

  1. Height
  2. Collar (neck) size
  3. Knot

Results update as you type, and every field accepts the units shown in its menu.

How it works

Enter your height and choose your collar size and favourite knot.

Tips

  • Measure over thin clothing with a soft tape held snug but not tight, and keep the tape level all the way round.
  • Take each measurement twice; if you are between sizes, the larger size is usually the safer choice.
  • Size charts vary by brand and country – check the maker’s own chart when it is available.
  • For sewing projects, pre-wash fabric before cutting and buy 10% extra for shrinkage, pattern matching and mistakes.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Mixing inches and centimetres between the tape and the size chart.
  • Forgetting seam and hem allowances when cutting fabric.
  • Measuring an old, stretched garment instead of your body.

Example values

How the main result changes when Height changes and everything else stays at the example values above:

Height (in) Recommended tie length (in)
35 54
52.5 54
70 57.5
87.5 62
105 62
140 62

Formula

Base length: under 5'7" → 54 in; 5'7"–6'1" → 57–58 in; over 6'1" → 61–63 inAdd ≈ 1 in for a half-Windsor and 2 in for a full Windsor; add 1–2 in for large collars

Worked example

Inputs — Height: 70 in; Collar (neck) size: Average (15–16½ in); Knot: Four-in-hand.
Results — Recommended tie length = 57.5 in; In centimetres = 146; Tie type to buy = Standard (≈ 57–58 in).
