> The moratorium calculator shows the cost of a loan moratorium – pausing EMIs for a few months while interest keeps accruing – the extra interest added to your loan, and either the higher EMI or the longer tenure needed afterwards.

## Inputs

- Outstanding loan amount
- Interest rate (p.a.) (%)
- Remaining tenure (years, months)
- Moratorium period (months)

## Results

- Current EMI
- Outstanding after the moratorium
- Interest accrued during the moratorium
- New EMI (same tenure)
- Extra months (same EMI)
- Extra interest paid overall (same EMI)

## Formula

```
Balance after moratorium = outstanding × (1 + r/12)^m (interest capitalized)
New EMI (same tenure) = pmt(r/12, remaining months, new balance)
New tenure (same EMI) = nper(r/12, EMI, new balance)
```

## Explanation

During the 2020 RBI moratorium interest continued to accrue on unpaid EMIs. Pausing payments helps cash flow now but increases the total interest you pay.

### How to use the Moratorium Calculator

- **Outstanding loan amount**
- **Interest rate (p.a.)**
- **Remaining tenure**
- **Moratorium period**

Results update as you type, and every field accepts the units shown in its menu.

### How it works

Enter the outstanding loan, interest rate, remaining tenure, current EMI and the moratorium period.

### Tips

- Figures use the latest published rates; government scheme rates are revised every quarter.
- Choose between the old and new tax regimes carefully – deductions only count in the old regime.
- Keep proofs of investments and rent for your employer and the tax return.
- Use the official portal of each scheme for exact maturity values.

### Common mistakes to avoid

- Assuming scheme interest rates are fixed for the whole term.
- Forgetting tax on interest from fixed and recurring deposits.
- Missing the yearly minimum deposit on PPF or Sukanya Samriddhi accounts.

### Inputs explained

FieldWhat to enterOutstanding loan amountAmount in ₹Interest rate (p.a.)In %Remaining tenureUnits: years, monthsMoratorium periodIn months

### What each result means

- **Current EMI** = pmt([Interest rate (p.a.)]÷1200, [Remaining tenure], [Outstanding loan amount])
- **Outstanding after the moratorium** = [Outstanding loan amount]×(1 + [Interest rate (p.a.)]÷1200)^[Moratorium period]
- **Interest accrued during the moratorium** = [Outstanding after the moratorium] - [Outstanding loan amount]
- **New EMI (same tenure)** = pmt([Interest rate (p.a.)]÷1200, [Remaining tenure], [Outstanding after the moratorium])
- **Extra months (same EMI)** = nper([Interest rate (p.a.)]÷1200, [Current EMI], [Outstanding after the moratorium]) - [Remaining tenure]
- **Extra interest paid overall (same EMI)** = [Current EMI]×nper([Interest rate (p.a.)]÷1200, [Current EMI], [Outstanding after the moratorium]) + 0 - [Current EMI]×[Remaining tenure]

### Example values

How the main result changes when **Outstanding loan amount** changes and everything else stays at the example values above:

Outstanding loan amountNew EMI (same tenure)1,250,00012,841.741,875,00019,262.612,500,00025,683.483,125,00032,104.353,750,00038,525.225,000,00051,366.96

## Worked example

Inputs — Outstanding loan amount: ₹2,500,000; Interest rate (p.a.): 8.5 %; Remaining tenure: 15 years; Moratorium period: 6 months.

Results — Current EMI = ₹24,618.49; Outstanding after the moratorium = ₹2,608,149.37; Interest accrued during the moratorium = ₹108,149.37; **New EMI (same tenure) = ₹25,683.48**; Extra months (same EMI) = 17; Extra interest paid overall (same EMI) = ₹409,822.92.

## FAQ

**What is a loan moratorium?**
A period when EMIs are paused.

**Does interest stop during a moratorium?**
Usually not – it accrues and is added to the loan.

**Should I take a moratorium?**
Only if you need the cash flow; it raises total cost.

**What formula does the Moratorium Calculator use?**
Balance after moratorium = outstanding × (1 + r/12)^m (interest capitalized).
