> The VAT calculator adds value-added tax to a net price or removes it from a gross price for any VAT rate – including the UK's 20% standard rate and EU rates from 17% to 27% – and shows the VAT amount.

## Inputs

- I want to
- VAT rate
- Custom VAT rate (%)
- Amount

## Results

- VAT rate used
- Net amount
- VAT amount
- Gross price (incl. VAT)

## Formula

```
Gross = net × (1 + VAT rate); VAT = net × rate
Net = gross ÷ (1 + VAT rate)
```

## Explanation

VAT is charged at each stage of the supply chain, but businesses reclaim the VAT they pay, so the final consumer bears it. To find the VAT in a VAT-inclusive UK price, divide by 6 (for 20% VAT).

### How to use the VAT Calculator

- **I want to**
- **VAT rate**
- **Custom VAT rate**
- **Amount**

Results update as you type, and every field accepts the units shown in its menu.

### How it works

Choose whether to add or remove VAT, pick the rate and enter the amount.

### Tips

- Tax figures here are estimates for planning – your actual tax depends on credits, deductions and local rules.
- Check the tax year and filing status before you rely on a result.
- Use gross (before-tax) figures unless a field asks for take-home pay.
- When in doubt, confirm with the tax authority's own calculator or a tax professional.

### Common mistakes to avoid

- Confusing marginal and effective tax rates.
- Adding sales tax to a price that already includes it.
- Forgetting payroll taxes (Social Security and Medicare) on wages.
