> The velocity of money calculator works out how many times a unit of money is spent in a year – nominal GDP divided by the money supply – using the equation of exchange MV = PQ.

## Inputs

- Nominal GDP
- Money supply (e.g. M2)

## Results

- Velocity of money

## Formula

```
Velocity V = nominal GDP ÷ money supply = (P × Q) ÷ M
Equation of exchange: M × V = P × Q
```

## Explanation

U.S. M2 velocity fell for decades and hit a record low in 2020 when savings surged; it has since partly recovered. The quantity theory of money assumes velocity is stable, which hasn't held in practice.

### How to use the Velocity of Money Calculator

- **Nominal GDP**
- **Money supply (e.g. M2)**

Results update as you type, and every field accepts the units shown in its menu.

### How it works

Enter nominal GDP (or price level and real output) and the money supply.

### Tips

- Use real (inflation-adjusted) figures to compare across years.
- Check whether data are seasonally adjusted.
- Use the same currency and base year throughout.
- Economic models simplify reality – treat results as illustrations, not forecasts.

### Common mistakes to avoid

- Mixing nominal and real values.
- Comparing percentage changes with percentage-point changes.
- Treating correlations as causes.
