> The ejection fraction calculator works out the percentage of blood the left ventricle pumps out with each beat from end-diastolic and end-systolic volumes – or from diameters with the Teichholz formula – and classifies heart failure as reduced, mildly reduced or preserved EF.

## Inputs

- Input
- End-diastolic volume (mL)
- End-systolic volume (mL)
- LV internal diameter, diastole (cm, mm)
- LV internal diameter, systole (cm, mm)

## Results

- End-diastolic volume used
- End-systolic volume used
- Ejection fraction
- Stroke volume

## Formula

```
EF = (EDV − ESV) ÷ EDV × 100
Teichholz volume V = 7 ÷ (2.4 + D) × D³ (D in cm)
Normal LVEF ≥ 50% (ASE: 52–72% men, 54–74% women)
```

## Explanation

Ejection fraction is the most widely used measure of heart pumping function. It defines the types of heart failure: HFrEF (EF ≤ 40%), HFmrEF (41–49%) and HFpEF (≥ 50% with symptoms).

### How to use the Ejection Fraction Calculator

- **Input**
- **End-diastolic volume**
- **End-systolic volume**
- **LV internal diameter, diastole**
- **LV internal diameter, systole**

Results update as you type, and every field accepts the units shown in its menu.

### How it works

Choose volumes (from Simpson's biplane echo or MRI) or diameters (from M-mode echo). With diameters the calculator converts each diameter into a volume with the Teichholz formula first.

### Inputs explained

### What each result means

- **Ejection fraction** = ([End-diastolic volume used] - [End-systolic volume used])÷[End-diastolic volume used]×100
- **Stroke volume** = [End-diastolic volume used] - [End-systolic volume used]

### Example values

How the main result changes when **End-diastolic volume** changes and everything else stays at the example values above:

## Worked example

Inputs — Input: Volumes (EDV and ESV); End-diastolic volume: 120 mL; End-systolic volume: 50 mL.

Results — End-diastolic volume used = 120 mL; End-systolic volume used = 50 mL; **Ejection fraction = 58 %**; Stroke volume = 70 mL.

## Key terms

- **LVEF**: Left ventricular ejection fraction.
- **HFrEF**: Heart failure with reduced ejection fraction.
- **HFpEF**: Heart failure with preserved ejection fraction.

## FAQ

**What is a normal ejection fraction?**
50–70%; ASE gives 52–72% for men and 54–74% for women.

**Can you have heart failure with a normal EF?**
Yes – heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF) is common, especially in older women.

**Can EF improve?**
Yes, often with treatment of the cause and modern heart failure medicines.
