> The glycemic load calculator multiplies a food's glycemic index by the grams of carbohydrate you eat to show its real effect on blood sugar. Pick a food from the list or enter your own GI, then set the portion, and add up a meal.

## Inputs

- Food
- Custom GI
- Custom carbohydrate per serving (g)
- Servings
- Second food (optional)
- Servings of second food

## Results

- GI of the food
- Carbohydrate eaten
- Glycemic load – food 1
- Glycemic load – food 2
- Total glycemic load

## Formula

```
GL = GI × available carbohydrate (g) ÷ 100
Low ≤ 10 · medium 11–19 · high ≥ 20 (per serving)
Daily GL: low < 80, high > 120
```

## Explanation

Glycemic load combines the quality (GI) and quantity of carbohydrate. Watermelon has a high GI but so little carbohydrate per slice that its glycemic load is low, while a large plate of white rice has a high load.

### How to use the Glycemic Load Calculator

- **Food**
- **Custom GI**
- **Custom carbohydrate per serving**
- **Servings**
- **Second food (optional)**
- **Servings of second food**

Results update as you type, and every field accepts the units shown in its menu.

### How it works

Choose a food or enter a custom GI and carbohydrate amount. Change the number of servings to match what you eat. Add a second food to see the total load of a meal.

### What each result means

- **Glycemic load – food 1** = [GI of the food]×[Carbohydrate eaten]÷100
- **Total glycemic load** = [Glycemic load – food 1] + [Glycemic load – food 2]

## Worked example

Inputs — Food: White rice, boiled (150 g); Servings: 1; Second food (optional): None; Servings of second food: 1.

Results — GI of the food = 73; Carbohydrate eaten = 43 g; Glycemic load – food 1 = 31; Glycemic load – food 2 = 0; **Total glycemic load = 31**.

## Key terms

- **GL**: Glycemic load.

## FAQ

**What is a good glycemic load per meal?**
Under 20, and ideally around 10 or less for snacks.

**Does glycemic load matter for weight loss?**
Lower-GL diets may help with fullness and blood sugar, but total calories still matter.

**Where do GI values come from?**
From standardised tests in at least 10 healthy people per food.
