> The revised Geneva score calculator estimates the probability of pulmonary embolism from age, previous clots, recent surgery, cancer, leg symptoms, haemoptysis and heart rate – using only objective items, without the clinician's gestalt.

## Inputs

- Age over 65
- Previous DVT or PE
- Surgery under general anaesthesia or lower-limb fracture in the past month
- Active cancer
- Unilateral lower-limb pain
- Haemoptysis
- Heart rate
- Pain on deep venous palpation of the leg and unilateral oedema

## Results

- Revised Geneva score
- Clinical probability of PE

## Formula

```
Score = sum of the points for each item
```

## Explanation

Unlike Wells, the revised Geneva score uses no subjective item, so it is more reproducible between clinicians. Probability is low at 0–3 points (about 8%), intermediate at 4–10 (about 28%) and high at 11 or more (about 74%).

### How to use the Revised Geneva Score for Pulmonary Embolism

- **Age over 65**
- **Previous DVT or PE**
- **Surgery under general anaesthesia or lower-limb fracture in the past month**
- **Active cancer**
- **Unilateral lower-limb pain**
- **Haemoptysis**
- **Heart rate**
- **Pain on deep venous palpation of the leg and unilateral oedema**

Results update as you type, and every field accepts the units shown in its menu.

### How it works

Each answer carries the points shown in the published score. The calculator adds them up and maps the total to the published interpretation.

## Worked example

Inputs — Age over 65: Yes; Previous DVT or PE: No; Surgery under general anaesthesia or lower-limb fracture in the past month: No; Active cancer: No; Unilateral lower-limb pain: No; Haemoptysis: No; Heart rate: 75–94 bpm; Pain on deep venous palpation of the leg and unilateral oedema: No.

Results — **Revised Geneva score = 4 / 22**; Clinical probability of PE = Intermediate (about 28%).

## Key terms

- **DVT**: Deep vein thrombosis.

## FAQ

**How is the Geneva score different from Wells?**
It uses only objective criteria, without "PE most likely".

**What happens with a low score?**
A normal D-dimer usually rules out PE.

**Is there a simplified version?**
Yes – the simplified Geneva score gives 1 point per item (2 for heart rate ≥ 95).
