> The stroke volume calculator works out how much blood the left ventricle pumps with each beat, from end-diastolic and end-systolic volumes or from cardiac output and heart rate, and gives the ejection fraction and stroke volume index.

## Inputs

- Method
- End-diastolic volume (mL)
- End-systolic volume (mL)
- Cardiac output (L/min)
- Heart rate (bpm)
- Height (cm, in, m, ft, mm)
- Weight (kg, lb, st, g)

## Results

- Stroke volume
- Stroke volume index

## Formula

```
SV = EDV − ESV  or  SV = CO ÷ HR × 1000
EF = SV ÷ EDV × 100
SVI = SV ÷ BSA
```

## Explanation

Stroke volume depends on preload (how full the heart is), afterload (the pressure it pumps against) and contractility. A normal resting stroke volume is about 60–100 mL.

### How to use the Stroke Volume Calculator

- **Method**
- **End-diastolic volume**
- **End-systolic volume**
- **Cardiac output**
- **Heart rate**
- **Height**
- **Weight**

Results update as you type, and every field accepts the units shown in its menu.

### How it works

Choose your method and enter the values from an echocardiogram or haemodynamic monitor, plus height and weight for the index.

### Example values

## Worked example

Inputs — Method: From ventricular volumes; End-diastolic volume: 120 mL; End-systolic volume: 50 mL; Height: 175 cm; Weight: 75 kg.

Results — **Stroke volume = 70 mL**; Stroke volume index = 37 mL/m².

## Key terms

- **EDV**: End-diastolic volume.
- **ESV**: End-systolic volume.

## FAQ

**What is a normal stroke volume?**
About 60–100 mL per beat at rest.

**What lowers stroke volume?**
Dehydration, blood loss, heart failure, valve disease and very fast heart rates.

**How is stroke volume measured?**
Usually by echocardiography, cardiac MRI or invasive monitoring.
