> The absolute change calculator finds the plain difference between an initial value a and a final value b, in the original units, together with the relative and percentage change for comparison.

## Inputs

- Initial value (a)
- Final value (b)

## Results

- Absolute change X
- Relative change
- Percentage change

## Formula

```
Absolute change X = b − a
Relative change = (b − a) ÷ |a|
```

## Explanation

Absolute change tells you how much something changed in its own units – the temperature rose by 4 °C, the price fell by $12. It is the natural measure when the size of the starting value does not matter, while relative (percentage) change compares changes of very different quantities.

### How to use the Absolute Change Calculator

- **Initial value (a)**
- **Final value (b)**

Results update as you type, and everything is calculated in your browser.

### How it works

Subtract the initial value from the final value. A positive result is an increase, a negative result a decrease. The relative change divides the absolute change by the starting value.

### Inputs explained

FieldWhat to enterInitial value (a)A numberFinal value (b)A number

### What each result means

- **Absolute change X** = [Final value (b)] - [Initial value (a)]
- **Relative change** = ([Final value (b)] - [Initial value (a)])÷abs([Initial value (a)])
- **Percentage change** = ([Final value (b)] - [Initial value (a)])÷abs([Initial value (a)])×100

### Example values

How the main result changes when **Initial value** changes and everything else stays at the example values above:

Initial value (a)Absolute change X24363624481260072-1296-36

## Worked example

Inputs — Initial value (a): 48; Final value (b): 60.

Results — **Absolute change X = 12**; Relative change = 0.25; Percentage change = 25 %.

## Key terms

- **Absolute change**: The difference final − initial.

## FAQ

**What is the difference between absolute and relative change?**
Absolute change is b − a in the original units; relative change divides that by a and has no units.

**Can absolute change be negative?**
Yes – a negative value means the quantity decreased.

**When is absolute change more useful?**
When comparing changes of the same quantity, such as daily temperatures or the same product's price.

**What is the absolute value of a change?**
|b − a|, its size regardless of direction.
