> The ceiling function calculator rounds a number up to the nearest integer, ⌈x⌉, or up to the nearest multiple of any step you choose (like Excel's CEILING).

## Inputs

- x
- Round up to a multiple of (step)

## Results

- Ceiling of x
- Ceiling to a multiple of the step
- Floor of x (for comparison)
- Distance to the ceiling

## Formula

```
⌈x⌉ = the smallest integer n with n ≥ x
Ceiling to a multiple s: s × ⌈x / s⌉
```

## Explanation

The ceiling function answers "how many do I need?" questions: 23 people need ⌈23/5⌉ = 5 cars of five seats, and 2.1 rolls of wallpaper means buying 3. Unlike ordinary rounding, it always goes up.

### How to use the Ceiling Function Calculator

- **x**
- **Round up to a multiple of (step)**

Results update as you type, and everything is calculated in your browser.

### How it works

For positive numbers the ceiling drops the fractional part and adds one (unless the number is already whole). For negative numbers it moves towards zero: ⌈−2.7⌉ = −2.

### Tips

- Estimate the answer first so you can spot an impossible result.
- Work with whole numbers where possible and place the decimal point at the end.
- Use the order of operations: brackets, powers, multiplication and division, then addition and subtraction.
- For large integers, the calculator works with exact whole-number arithmetic in your browser.

### Common mistakes to avoid

- Misaligning decimal points when adding or subtracting.
- Forgetting the remainder in whole-number division.
- Rounding too early in a multi-step calculation.

### Inputs explained

### What each result means

- **Ceiling of x** = ceil([x])
- **Ceiling to a multiple of the step** = [Round up to a multiple of (step)]×ceil([x]÷[Round up to a multiple of (step)])
- **Floor of x (for comparison)** = floor([x])
- **Distance to the ceiling** = ceil([x]) - [x]

### Example values

How the main result changes when **x** changes and everything else stays at the example values above:

## Worked example

Inputs — x: 7.25; Round up to a multiple of (step): 1.

Results — **Ceiling of x = 8**; Ceiling to a multiple of the step = 8; Floor of x (for comparison) = 7; Distance to the ceiling = 0.75.

## Key terms

- **Ceiling function**: ⌈x⌉, the least integer ≥ x.

## FAQ

**What is the ceiling of 4.1?**
5.

**What is the ceiling of −4.1?**
−4, because −4 is the smallest integer greater than or equal to −4.1.

**What is the ceiling of a whole number?**
The number itself.

**How is ceiling different from rounding?**
Rounding goes to the nearest integer; ceiling always goes up.

**What formula does the Ceiling Function Calculator use?**
⌈x⌉ = the smallest integer n with n ≥ x.
