## Explanation

Christmas falls on 25 December every year in the Gregorian calendar, but the weekday moves: one day later each year and two days later after 29 February. Counting the days by hand means adding the days left in the current month, the full months in between and the 25 days of December – easy to get wrong by one.

This countdown does the counting for you. Leave the date on today and it reads your device clock, so you get the exact days, hours, minutes and seconds left until midnight on Christmas morning in your own time zone. Pick another date to plan ahead – for example how many days lie between Thanksgiving and Christmas, or how many weekends you still have for shopping.

Churches that still follow the Julian calendar for feasts – including the Russian, Serbian, Georgian and Ukrainian Greek Catholic traditions in many parishes – celebrate Christmas on 7 January in the civil calendar. Choose the Orthodox option to count down to that date instead.

### How it works

The calculator finds the next 25 December (or 7 January) on or after the chosen date and subtracts the two day numbers. When the date is today it also uses the current time on your device to split the remainder into hours, minutes and seconds.

### Worked example

Counting from Friday 30 October 2026: November has 30 days and Christmas is the 25th day of December, so the total is 1 (31 October) + 30 + 25 = 56 days, which is exactly 8 weeks, 1,344 hours or 80,640 minutes. There are 8 Saturdays (weekends) and 39 weekdays in between.

Leave the date on today – the result is the number of days to the next 25 December. From 1 December there are 24 days; from 1 November, 54 days.

Divide the days by 7. From 30 October 2026 there are 56 days, exactly 8 weeks.

**What day of the week is Christmas 2026?**
Friday, 25 December 2026. In 2027 it is a Saturday and in 2028 a Monday (2028 is a leap year, so the weekday jumps two days).

**Why do some churches celebrate Christmas on 7 January?**
They keep the Julian calendar for church feasts. Its 25 December currently falls on 7 January of the Gregorian calendar – a 13-day gap until 2100.

**How many sleeps until Christmas?**
The same as the number of days: each night you sleep brings you one day closer. On Christmas Eve there is one sleep left.

**How many shopping weekends are left?**
