> The gender wage gap calculator shows what your salary would be at the average pay of the other sex in your country, using official unadjusted gender pay gap statistics (Eurostat 2024, ONS 2026, BLS 2026, OECD 2024), plus the yearly difference, cents on the dollar and Equal Pay Day.

## Inputs

- Country
- Gender pay gap (%)
- I am a…
- My pay
- Pay period

## Results

- Unadjusted gender pay gap
- Equivalent pay for the other sex
- Difference per pay period
- Difference per year
- Women earn per 1.00 earned by men
- Days women work "for free" each year
- Equal Pay Day 2026 (women catch up with men's previous-year pay)

## Formula

```
Gap = (men's pay − women's pay) ÷ men's pay · women's equivalent = salary × (1 − gap) · men's equivalent = salary ÷ (1 − gap)
```

## Explanation

The gender pay gap compares the typical pay of women and men. The unadjusted (raw) gap simply takes average or median earnings of all employed women and men, without accounting for job, hours, experience or education. It does not mean a woman earns less than a man in the same job – that is "unequal pay for equal work", which is illegal in the EU, UK and US – but it captures everything that pushes women's earnings down: occupational segregation, part-time work, career breaks for children, fewer women in senior roles and remaining discrimination.

Countries measure it differently. Eurostat compares mean gross hourly earnings in firms with ten or more employees; the UK's Office for National Statistics uses median hourly pay of full-time employees excluding overtime; the US Bureau of Labor Statistics compares median weekly earnings of full-time workers; the OECD uses median full-time earnings. The gaps are therefore indicators, not exact comparisons between countries.

Choose your country and sex and enter your pay: the calculator applies the national gap to show what the same position on the pay ladder would earn for the other sex.

### How to use the Gender Wage Gap Calculator

- **Country**
- **Gender pay gap**
- **I am a…**
- **My pay**
- **Pay period**

Results update as you type, every field has its own unit menu, and everything is calculated in your browser.

### How it works

The calculator looks up the unadjusted gap g for the chosen country. A woman's salary S corresponds to S ÷ (1 − g) for men; a man's salary corresponds to S × (1 − g) for women. Equal Pay Day is the gap expressed in days of the year.

### Worked example

Germany's unadjusted gap in 2024 was 15.6%. A woman earning €50,000 a year is at the same point of the distribution as a man earning 50,000 ÷ (1 − 0.156) = €59,242 – a difference of €9,242 a year. Put the other way round, a man on €50,000 corresponds to a woman on 50,000 × 0.844 = €42,200. The gap equals 57 days of the year; Equal Pay Day falls on 9 March (15.6 ÷ 84.4 × 365 = 67.5 days into the year).

## Worked example

Inputs — Country: Germany; I am a…: Woman; My pay: $50,000; Pay period: Per year.

Results — Unadjusted gender pay gap = 15.6 %; **Equivalent pay for the other sex = $59,241.71**; Difference per pay period = $9,241.71; Difference per year = $9,241.71; Women earn per 1.00 earned by men = $0.84; Days women work "for free" each year = 57 days; Equal Pay Day 2026 (women catch up with men's previous-year pay) = Mon, March 9, 2026.

## Key terms

- **Unadjusted pay gap**: Difference between men's and women's average (or median) pay as a share of men's pay, with no adjustment for job or hours.
- **Adjusted pay gap**: The part of the gap that remains after comparing women and men with similar jobs, hours, education and experience.
- **Median earnings**: The middle value – half of workers earn more and half less.
- **Equal Pay Day**: The date that symbolises how far into the year women work to match men's previous-year earnings.

## FAQ

**What is the gender pay gap in the EU?**
11.1% in 2024 according to Eurostat – women's average gross hourly earnings were 11.1% below men's. Estonia had the largest gap (18.8%) and Luxembourg a slightly negative one (−0.8%).

**What is the gender pay gap in the US?**
In the third quarter of 2026 women working full time had median weekly earnings of $1,127, 83.4% of men's $1,352 (BLS), a gap of 16.6%.

**What is the UK gender pay gap?**
6.8% for full-time employees and 12.3% for all employees in April 2026 (ONS, median hourly earnings excluding overtime).

**Does the gap mean women are paid less for the same job?**
Not directly. The unadjusted gap compares all women with all men; part of it comes from different jobs, hours and careers. Studies that adjust for these factors still find an unexplained gap of several percent.

**Why do different sources give different numbers?**
They use means or medians, hourly or weekly pay, full-time or all workers, and different company sizes. Compare countries only within the same source.

**What is Equal Pay Day?**
The day in the new year until which women would have to keep working to earn what men earned in the previous year. With a 15.6% gap that is about 67 extra days, so it falls around 9 March.

**What does a negative gap mean?**
Women's average pay is higher than men's, as in Luxembourg (−0.8% in 2024). It often reflects which women are in paid work rather than equal treatment.
