> The middle school GPA calculator turns middle-school letter grades into a grade point average on the 4.0 or 4.33 scale, with optional credits per subject, optional Honors weighting and an optional cumulative GPA across report cards.

## Inputs

- Subjects – one per line: subject, grade (credits, level optional)
- Grade scale
- Subjects have
- Advanced / Honors classes
- Combine with an earlier GPA
- Earlier GPA
- Subjects (or credits) behind it

## Results

- Middle school GPA
- Unweighted GPA
- Combined GPA
- Subjects
- Credits / subjects counted
- Letter equivalent
- Subject breakdown

## Formula

```
GPA = Σ grade points ÷ number of subjects (or Σ points × credits ÷ Σ credits) · A+ = 4.3, A = 4.0, A− = 3.7 … D− = 0.7, F = 0
```

## Explanation

Many middle schools (grades 6–8) report letter grades but never print a GPA, so families often want to calculate one – to track progress, apply for gifted or magnet programmes, or prepare for high school, where the GPA starts to count for college. A middle school GPA is calculated the same way as any other: each letter becomes grade points, and the points are averaged.

Most middle schools give every core subject the same weight, so the default here is "all subjects count equally"; switch to credits if electives count less. Many report cards show A+ grades, so the default scale awards 4.3 for an A+, as is common in middle-school grading; choose the 4.0 scale if your school caps it at 4.0. Advanced or Honors classes can be weighted too.

Type one subject per line with its grade, for example "Math, B+". Typical middle school GPAs fall between about 2.7 and 3.3; the breakdown shows which subjects pull the average down, which is where extra study time pays off most.

### How to use the Middle School GPA Calculator

- **Subjects – one per line: subject, grade (credits, level optional)**
- **Grade scale**
- **Subjects have**
- **Advanced / Honors classes**
- **Combine with an earlier GPA**
- **Earlier GPA**
- **Subjects (or credits) behind it**

Everything is calculated in your browser, so results appear instantly and nothing you type is sent to a server.

### How it works

Letters are converted to points on the chosen scale, optional bonuses are added for advanced classes, and the points are averaged equally or by credits. A prior GPA can be combined by its credits or number of subjects.

### Worked example

Math B (3.0), Science A− (3.7), English B+ (3.3), Social Studies A (4.0), Spanish C+ (2.3) and Art A+ (4.3), all equally weighted: (3 + 3.7 + 3.3 + 4 + 2.3 + 4.3) ÷ 6 = 20.6 ÷ 6 = **3.43**. On the 4.0 scale (A+ = 4.0) the GPA would be 20.3 ÷ 6 = 3.38.

## Worked example

Inputs — Subjects – one per line: subject, grade (credits, level optional): Math, B
Science, A-
English, B+
Social Studies, A
Spanish, C+
Art, A+; Grade scale: 4.33 scale (A+ = 4.3); Subjects have: Equal weight; Advanced / Honors classes: No weighting; Combine with an earlier GPA: No.

Results — **Middle school GPA = 3.43**; Unweighted GPA = 3.43; Combined GPA = 3.43; Subjects = 6; Credits / subjects counted = 6; Letter equivalent = B+ average (unweighted).

## Key terms

- **Grade points**: The number value of a letter grade.
- **Report card**: The periodic list of grades a school issues.
- **4.33 scale**: A scale on which an A+ earns 4.3 points.

## FAQ

**Does middle school GPA matter?**
It rarely affects college admission, but it can decide placement in honors tracks, magnet schools and some scholarships.

**What is a good middle school GPA?**
3.0 or higher is good; the typical range is about 2.7–3.3.

**Is an A+ worth 4.3?**
At many middle schools yes; others cap it at 4.0 – choose the scale your school uses.

**Do electives count?**
Usually, but some schools weight them less – use credits to reflect that.

**How do I calculate GPA for one report card?**
Add the grade points of all subjects and divide by the number of subjects.

**How can I raise my GPA quickly?**
Work on the lowest grade first: raising a C+ to a B+ in one of six subjects adds 0.17 to the GPA.
