Port Length Quiz (Subwoofer Practice Questions)

Quick answer

The port length quiz is a practice tool for speaker builders: it asks multiple-choice questions about subwoofers and bass-reflex ports, and calculation questions where you work out the port length for a given box, tuning and port size. Get instant feedback, worked solutions and a running score.

Question
A ported box has a net volume of 140 L and should be tuned to 33 Hz. It uses 2 round ports with an inner diameter of 12.5 cm and an end correction factor k = 0.732 (one end flanged). How long must each port be?
Result
Type your port length in cm in “Your answer (cm)”.

Designing a ported subwoofer is easier when the ideas behind it are second nature: why bass leaks through walls, what the port actually does, why a longer port tunes lower, and why a small port chuffs. This quiz drills those ideas with randomly chosen questions and shuffled answers, so you can practise as often as you like.

Calculation questions give you a box volume, a tuning frequency, the number and diameter of round ports and the end correction factor, and ask for the port length in centimetres. They use the popular textbook form of the Helmholtz formula with the constant 23,562.5 (which corresponds to a speed of sound of about 344 m/s); answers within 3% are marked correct, and the full working is shown afterwards.

Choose concept questions, calculations or a mix, answer in the matching field and press “New question” for the next one. Your score for the session is kept until you reload the page. When you are ready to design a real box, use the port length calculator.

How it works

A question is drawn at random from the bank (answers shuffled) or generated with realistic values (20–150 L, 25–45 Hz, 5–15 cm ports). Your answer is compared with the stored solution: the multiple-choice letter must match, and a calculated length must be within ±3% (at least ±0.5 cm).

Worked example

Question: a 40 L box tuned to 30 Hz with one 7.5 cm port, k = 0.732. L = 23,562.5 × 7.5² × 1 ÷ (40 × 30²) − 0.732 × 7.5 = 1,325,390.6 ÷ 36,000 − 5.49 = 36.82 − 5.49 = 31.3 cm. Answers from 30.4 to 32.2 cm would be marked correct.

Topics covered

  • Why low frequencies pass through walls and floors
  • Bass-reflex vs sealed enclosures
  • How port length, diameter and box volume change the tuning
  • End correction and flared ports
  • Port air speed and chuffing
  • Crossover frequency, wavelength and room effects

Formula

Port length: L = 23,562.5 × D² × N ÷ (V × F²) − k × D (D and L in cm, V in litres, F in Hz, N ports, k end correction)

Key terms

Helmholtz resonator
A cavity with a neck whose air resonates at one frequency.
Port (vent)
The tube that connects the box air with the room.
Chuffing
Noise from turbulent air in an undersized port.
Tuning frequency
The resonance frequency of the box and port.

Frequently asked questions

How is the port length calculated?

L = 23,562.5 × D² × N ÷ (V × F²) − k × D with D and L in cm, V in litres and F in Hz. Example: 50 L, 35 Hz, one 10 cm port, k = 0.732 → 38.5 − 7.3 ≈ 31.2 cm.

What tolerance does the quiz accept?

±3% of the exact answer (at least ±0.5 cm), because rounding intermediate steps is normal.

How do I get a new question?

Press “New question”. Your answer fields are cleared automatically.

Is my score saved?

Only for this page visit – reload the page to start again. Nothing is sent anywhere.

Why does the quiz use 23,562.5 instead of 23,542?

It is the widely published textbook constant (speed of sound about 344.1 m/s). The calculator page lets you set the speed of sound yourself; the difference is under 0.1%.

What is a good score?

Aim for 80% or more on concept questions before building; for calculations, check units first – litres and centimetres are the usual pitfalls.
