In the US each state fixes the date by which a child must be five to enter kindergarten, most often 1 September. In England and Wales a school year contains everyone born from 1 September to 31 August, and children start Reception in the September after they turn four. Northern Ireland uses 1 July as the boundary, and Scotland groups children born from March to the following February, so Scottish pupils start Primary 1 between about 4½ and 5½. Choose the country (and, for the US, the state), enter the date of birth, and the calculator lists each stage of schooling with its start date and the child's age, plus the grade or year group the child is in during the current school year. It assumes the child starts on time and never repeats or skips a year. Parents of summer-born children in England, and of January–February birthdays in Scotland, can often defer entry by a year; US families may delay kindergarten too.
