> The T9 to text converter translates phone keypad sequences into text and back: multi-tap presses (44 33 555 555 666 = HELLO), text to multi-tap, text to one-digit-per-letter T9 codes, and T9 codes to possible words (textonyms) from a built-in list of common words.

## Inputs

- I want to translate
- Key presses or text

## Results

- Result
- Key presses
- T9 code (one digit per letter)
- Letters
- Presses per character
- Note

## Formula

```
Multi-tap: key k pressed m times → m-th letter on key k (2 = ABC, 3 = DEF, 4 = GHI, 5 = JKL, 6 = MNO, 7 = PQRS, 8 = TUV, 9 = WXYZ, 0 = space)
T9: one digit per letter, dictionary picks the word
```

## Explanation

Before touchscreens, phones had a 12-key keypad with three or four letters on each of the keys 2 to 9 – a layout standardised by the ITU in recommendation E.161. Texting with it worked in two ways. With multi-tap you pressed a key repeatedly to cycle through its letters: 4 once for G, twice for H, three times for I, pausing (or pressing a different key) before the next letter. T9 (“text on 9 keys”), introduced by Tegic in the late 1990s, needed only one press per letter and used a dictionary to guess the word.

The catch of T9 was textonyms – different words with the same key sequence. 4663 can be good, home, gone, hood or hoof, and 5477 is both kiss and lips; the phone showed the most common one and you pressed “next” for the others. Multi-tap had no ambiguity but needed many more presses: on average about 2.2 presses per letter for English text.

Write multi-tap with a space between letters (44 33 555 555 666) – a space is needed whenever two letters share a key, just like the pause on a real phone. 0 is a space and 1 cycles through . , ? ! and the apostrophe.

### How to use the T9 to Text Converter

- **I want to translate**
- **Key presses or text**

Everything is calculated in your browser, so results appear instantly and nothing you type is sent to a server.

### How it works

Multi-tap input is split at spaces into runs of identical digits; the length of each run selects the letter (wrapping round if pressed more times than the key has letters). Encoding reverses the table. The T9 word mode looks up each digit group in a built-in list of about 290 common English words and shows every match.

### Worked example

Decode **44 33 555 555 666 0 9 666 777 555 3**: 44 = H (key 4 twice), 33 = E, 555 = L, 555 = L, 666 = O, 0 = space, 9 = W, 666 = O, 777 = R, 555 = L, 3 = D. The message is **HELLO WORLD**, typed with 25 key presses for 10 letters plus a space. In T9 the same words are 43556 96753 – only 10 presses.

## Worked example

Inputs — I want to translate: Multi-tap key presses → text; Key presses or text: 44 33 555 555 666 0 9 666 777 555 3.

Results — **Result = HELLO WORLD**; Key presses = 25; Letters = 10.

## Key terms

- **Multi-tap**: Pressing a key several times to choose one of its letters.
- **T9**: Predictive text on 9 keys: one press per letter plus a dictionary.
- **Textonym**: Words with the same keypad sequence, e.g. kiss and lips (5477).
- **E.161**: ITU recommendation that fixes the letter layout of phone keypads.

## FAQ

**How do I type “hello” on a phone keypad?**
Multi-tap: 44 33 555 555 666 (13 presses). T9: 43556 (5 presses).

**What does 4663 mean in T9?**
It matches good, home, gone, hood and hoof – the classic textonym example.

**What is on key 7 and key 9?**
7 has P, Q, R, S and 9 has W, X, Y, Z – the only keys with four letters.

**Why do I need spaces between presses?**
Two letters on the same key (like L L in “hello”) would merge: 555555 is read as one run. On a phone you paused; here you type a space.

**What does 0 do?**
It enters a space; 1 gives punctuation (. , ? ! ').

**Does the iPhone support T9?**
iPhones and most Android phones can search contacts by T9 digits in the dialler, but texting keyboards are full QWERTY.

**How many presses does multi-tap need?**
About 2.2 per letter for typical English text; T9 needs one per letter plus occasional “next word” presses.
