> The what grade was I in calculator tells you which US school grade you (or anyone) were in during a given year, from one grade and school year you already know, and also gives your class year.

## Inputs

- A grade I know I was in
- Year that school year began (fall)
- School year I want to know about (fall of)

## Results

- Grade in that school year
- Class of (graduation year)
- Kindergarten began in fall
- Years between the two school years

## Formula

```
Grade in year Y = known grade + (Y − year that grade began) · kindergarten = 0, 12th grade = 12 · outside 0–12: before school or graduated
```

## Explanation

Forms, reunions and family stories often ask "what grade were you in when…?". If you know one fixed point – for example that you started 3rd grade in fall 2016 – every other year follows, because a student moves up exactly one grade each school year in the US K–12 system.

Enter the grade and the year that school year began, then the year you are curious about. The calculator counts the years in between and adds them to the known grade. A result of 0 means kindergarten, 1 to 12 the matching grade, a negative number means you had not started school yet, and anything above 12 means you had already graduated – it then shows your class year.

The year of interest is read as the school year that began in that fall – so "2020" means the 2020–21 school year. For an event in the spring, use the previous calendar year: something in March 2021 happened in the school year that began in fall 2020. The answer assumes no grades were skipped or repeated.

### How to use the What Grade Was I In Calculator

- **A grade I know I was in**
- **Year that school year began (fall)**
- **School year I want to know about (fall of)**

Results update as you type, every field has its own unit menu, and everything is calculated in your browser.

### How it works

The number of school years between the known year and the year of interest is added to the known grade; the result is labelled with the matching grade name.

### Worked example

You started 3rd grade in fall 2016. In the school year starting fall 2020 you were in 3 + (2020 − 2016) = **7th grade**. You started kindergarten in fall 2013 and belong to the Class of 2026.

### What each result means

- **Class of (graduation year)** = [Year that school year began (fall)] + 13 - [A grade I know I was in]
- **Kindergarten began in fall** = [Year that school year began (fall)] - [A grade I know I was in]
- **Years between the two school years** = [School year I want to know about (fall of)] - [Year that school year began (fall)]

## Worked example

Inputs — A grade I know I was in: 3rd grade; Year that school year began (fall): 2,016; School year I want to know about (fall of): 2,020.

Results — **Grade in that school year = 7th grade**; Class of (graduation year) = 2026; Kindergarten began in fall = 2013; Years between the two school years = 4.
