> The sensible heat calculator finds the heat absorbed or released when a substance changes temperature without changing phase, from its mass, specific heat and the initial and final temperatures.

## Inputs

- Material
- Specific heat c (J/(kg·K), kJ/(kg·K), J/(g·K), BTU/(lb·°F), cal/(g·°C))
- Mass m (kg, g, mg, t, lb, oz)
- Initial temperature (°C, °F, K)
- Final temperature (°C, °F, K)

## Results

- Sensible heat Q
- Heat

## Formula

```
Q = m·c·(T_f − T_i)
```

## Explanation

Sensible heat is the heat you can "sense" with a thermometer – it changes temperature. Heating water for a bath, warming a room or cooling a hot engine block are all sensible-heat processes.

### How to use the Sensible Heat Calculator

- **Material**
- **Specific heat c**
- **Mass m**
- **Initial temperature**
- **Final temperature**

Results update as you type, every field has its own unit menu, and everything is calculated in your browser.

### How it works

Choose the material, enter the mass and the temperatures.

### Tips

- Use absolute temperature (K) in gas laws and efficiency formulas.
- Temperature differences are the same in K and °C.
- Heat = mass × specific heat × temperature change when no phase change occurs.
- Phase changes need latent heat at a constant temperature.

### Common mistakes to avoid

- Using °C in pV = nRT.
- Forgetting latent heat during melting or boiling.
- Confusing heat capacity (J/K) with specific heat (J/(kg·K)).

### Example values

How the main result changes when **Specific heat c** changes and everything else stays at the example values above:

## Worked example

Inputs — Material: Water; Mass m: 10 kg; Initial temperature: 15 °C; Final temperature: 60 °C.

Results — **Sensible heat Q = 1,881,900 J**; Heat = Absorbed.

## Key terms

- **Sensible heat**: Heat that changes temperature.

## FAQ

**What is the difference between sensible and latent heat?**
Sensible heat changes temperature; latent heat changes phase.

**How much energy heats 10 L of water by 45 °C?**
About 1.9 MJ (0.52 kWh).

**Why does water need so much heat?**
Its specific heat is unusually high.

**Can I use this across a phase change?**
No – add latent heat separately.

**What formula does the Sensible Heat Calculator use?**
Q = m·c·(T_f − T_i).
