> This speed calculator divides distance by time to find average speed in m/s, km/h, mph or knots, and shows running pace in minutes per kilometre. Type a speed into the result to calculate the distance covered in a given time instead.

## Inputs

- Distance (m, km, mi, ft)
- Time (s, min, h)

## Results

- Average speed — Type a speed to get the distance covered in that time.
- Pace

## Formula

```
speed = distance ÷ time
distance = speed × time
time = distance ÷ speed
```

## Explanation

Average speed describes a whole journey, including slow and fast sections. It is total distance divided by total time, not the average of several speeds.

### How to use it

Enter distance and time with any units. To plan a trip, type your expected speed in the result to see how far you will travel.

### Common mistake

Driving 60 km at 60 km/h and another 60 km at 30 km/h does not average 45 km/h. Total time is 3 hours for 120 km, so the true average is 40 km/h.

### Inputs explained

FieldWhat to enterDistanceUnits: m, km, mi, ftTimeUnits: s, min, h

### What each result means

- **Average speed** = [Distance] ÷ [Time]
- **Pace** = [Time] ÷ [Distance] × 1000 ÷ 60

### Example values

How the main result changes when **Distance** changes and everything else stays at the example values above:

Distance (m)Average speed (m/s)60,00011.1190,00016.67120,00022.22150,00027.78180,00033.33240,00044.44

## Worked example

120 km in 1 h 30 min (5,400 s).

Speed = 120,000 m ÷ 5,400 s ≈ 22.22 m/s = **80 km/h** (49.7 mph). Pace = 0.75 min/km.

## Key terms

- **Average speed**: Total distance divided by total time.
- **Velocity**: Speed with a direction.
- **Pace**: Time per unit distance, used in running.

## FAQ

**How do I convert km/h to m/s?**
Divide by 3.6.

**What is a knot?**
One nautical mile (1,852 m) per hour, about 1.852 km/h.

**Can I calculate time?**
Enter distance, then adjust time until the speed matches, or rearrange: time = distance ÷ speed.

**What formula does the Speed Distance Time Calculator use?**
speed = distance ÷ time.

**Can I work backwards from the result?**
Yes. Type the result you want into Average speed and the calculator finds the matching distance.
