> The volume to mass calculator converts the volume of a substance into its mass (and back) using its density, with common liquids, foods and building materials.

## Inputs

- Substance
- Custom density (kg/m³, g/cm³, g/mL, lb/ft³, lb/in³)
- Volume V (L, mL, m³, US gal, ft³)

## Results

- Mass
- Density used

## Formula

```
m = ρ·V
```

## Explanation

How much does a litre of honey weigh? Or a cubic metre of sand? Multiplying the volume by the density gives the mass. Densities for foods are averages – packing and moisture change them.

### How to use the Volume to Mass Calculator

- **Substance**
- **Custom density**
- **Volume V**
- Every result field is editable: type into **Mass** and **Volume V** plus every other field update to match.

Results update as you type, every field has its own unit menu, and everything is calculated in your browser.

### How it works

Choose the substance (or a custom density) and enter the volume, or type a mass into the result.

### Inputs explained

FieldWhat to enterSubstanceChoose one: Water, Milk, Honey, Olive oil …Custom densityUnits: kg/m³, g/cm³, g/mL, lb/ft³, lb/in³Volume VUnits: L, mL, m³, US gal, ft³

### What each result means

- **Mass** = [r]×[Volume V]
- **Density used** = [r]

### Example values

How the main result changes when **Volume V** changes and everything else stays at the example values above:

Volume V (L)Mass (kg)0.50.50.750.75111.251.251.51.522

## Worked example

Inputs — Substance: Water; Volume V: 1 L.

Results — **Mass = 1 kg**; Density used = 1,000 kg/m³.

## Key terms

- **Density**: Mass per unit volume.

## FAQ

**How much does a litre of water weigh?**
About 1 kg.

**Why are food densities approximate?**
Packing, sifting and moisture vary.

**Can I go from mass to volume?**
Yes – type the mass into the result.

**Is a cup of flour 125 g?**
Roughly 120–130 g for sifted all-purpose flour.
