## Formula

```
TB = 1B + 2·2B + 3·3B + 4·HR,  SLG = TB ÷ AB,  OBP = (H + BB + HBP) ÷ (AB + BB + HBP + SF),  OPS = OBP + SLG
```

## Explanation

OPS rewards both getting on base and hitting for power. It is a quick, popular summary of a hitter: .900 or better is excellent, .700 is about average.

### What each result means

- **Hits** = [Singles] + [Doubles] + [Triples] + [Home runs]
- **Total bases** = [Singles] + 2×[Doubles] + 3×[Triples] + 4×[Home runs]
- **Batting average** = [Hits]÷[At-bats]
- **On-base percentage** = ([Hits] + [Walks] + [Hit by pitch])÷([At-bats] + [Walks] + [Hit by pitch] + [Sacrifice flies])
- **Slugging percentage** = [Total bases]÷[At-bats]
- **OPS** = [On-base percentage] + [Slugging percentage]

## FAQ

**What is a good OPS?**
.900+ is excellent, .800 very good and about .700 average.

**Is OPS a perfect stat?**
No – it weights SLG and OBP equally though OBP is worth more.

**What is OPS+?**
OPS adjusted for park and league, scaled so 100 is average.

**Why are home runs worth 4 total bases?**
The batter reaches all four bases.
