Wins Above Replacement sums everything a player contributes into one number: how many more wins they are worth than a freely available replacement player. A 2-WAR season is solid, 5 is All-Star level and 8+ is MVP calibre.

Example values
How the main result changes when Batting runs changes and everything else stays at the example values above:
| Batting runs | WAR |
|---|---|
| 12.5 | 4.54 |
| 18.75 | 5.18 |
| 25 | 5.82 |
| 31.25 | 6.45 |
| 37.5 | 7.09 |
| 50 | 8.37 |
Formula
Position player: WAR = (Batting + Base running + Fielding + Positional + League + Replacement runs) ÷ Runs per win
Pitcher: WAR = [((lgFIP − FIP)/RPW_p + Replacement level) × IP × Leverage/9] + League correction
Worked example
Inputs — Calculate WAR for: Position player; Batting runs: 25; Base running runs: 3; Fielding runs: 5; Positional adjustment: 2.5; League adjustment: 1.5; Replacement runs: 20; Runs per win: 9.8.
Results — WAR = 5.82; Season level = All-Star.
Key terms
- Runs per win
- Extra runs needed to add one win.
