Sometimes a standard die is not enough. A game may need a d6, a d10 and a d20 rolled together, a homebrew rule may ask for a d7 or a d30, or you may want a “die” whose faces are not numbers at all: six restaurants, four chores, the names of your players, or yes / no / maybe. This roller handles both.
In numeric mode, list the number of sides of each die, separated by commas – any value from 2 to 1,000 and up to 100 dice. The result shows each die labelled by its type, the total with an optional modifier, the expected total and the range, and a chart of the exact probability of each total with your roll highlighted.
In labelled mode, type the faces separated by commas and choose how many times to roll. Each face is equally likely, so with five faces each has a 20% chance. The tool lists the results in order, counts how often each face came up, names the most frequent one and draws a bar chart of the tally – a fair way to share out tasks or settle a choice among friends.
How to use the Custom Dice Roller
- Kind of dice
- Sides of each die
- Modifier added to the total
- Faces (separate with commas)
- Number of rolls
Everything is calculated in your browser, so results appear instantly and nothing you type is sent to a server.
How it works
Each numeric die is a uniform random integer from 1 to its number of sides, and the total’s distribution is the exact convolution of all the dice. Each labelled roll picks one of the faces with equal probability using the secure random generator.
Worked example
Rolling a d6, a d10 and a d20 gave 1, 7 and 15: a total of 23. The expected total is 3.5 + 5.5 + 10.5 = 19.5 and there are 6 × 10 × 20 = 1,200 equally likely outcomes. With a labelled die of six meals rolled 10 times, each meal is expected about 1.67 times, and a particular meal coming up 4 or more times has a 6.97% chance.
Ideas for labelled dice
| Use | Faces |
|---|---|
| Decision | Yes, No, Maybe |
| Chores | Dishes, Laundry, Vacuum, Bins |
| Dinner | Pizza, Tacos, Sushi, Curry, Burgers, Salad |
| Game turn order | the players’ names |
Formula
Numeric dice: total = Σ dice + modifier, expected total = Σ (sᵢ + 1)/2 · labelled die with f faces: each face 1/f
Worked example
Inputs — Kind of dice: Numeric dice – list the sides of each; Sides of each die: 6, 10, 20; Modifier added to the total: 0.
Results — Total = 26; Results = d6: 5, d10: 5, d20: 16; Average (expected) total = 19.5; Possible totals = 3 to 36; Chance of this total (numeric) / of each face (labels) = 4.1667 %.
Key terms
- Custom die
- A die with a chosen number of sides or with chosen labels.
- Tally
- A count of how often each outcome occurred.
- Uniform choice
- A random selection in which every option has the same chance.
Frequently asked questions
Can I roll dice with different numbers of sides together?
Yes – list them, e.g. 4, 6, 8, 12, 20. Each is rolled separately and the total is added up.
Can I make a die with words on it?
Yes. Choose labelled mode and type the faces separated by commas, such as Yes, No, Maybe.
Is a custom die with 7 faces fair?
Virtual dice with any number of faces are perfectly fair: each face has probability 1/7. Physical d7s are usually pentagonal prisms.
What is the expected total of 1d6 + 1d10 + 1d20?
3.5 + 5.5 + 10.5 = 19.5, with totals from 3 to 36.
How many faces can a labelled die have?
Up to 200 faces and 1,000 rolls at once.
Can I use it to pick a random person?
Yes – type the names as faces and roll once; every name has the same chance.
