Area Converter

Quick answer

The area converter converts area between square feet, square kilometres, hectares, acres, square inches, square yards and more. Choose any “from” and “to” unit, type a number into any field and every other unit updates instantly; all conversion factors are exact definitions.

To

Square kilometres
— km²
Hectares

Acres

Square inches

Square yards

Square miles
— mi²

Floor plans, land titles and paint tins all quote area, but in different units: square feet in the U.S., square metres in most of the world, acres and hectares for land, and marla, kanal or bigha in South Asia. Area factors are the squares of length factors, so 1 ft² is 0.3048² = 0.09290304 m² exactly.

How to use the Area Converter

  1. Pick the unit you are starting from in the From menu and type your value.
  2. Pick the unit you want in the To menu. The heading changes to match – for example “Square Meters to Square Feet Converter”.
  3. The most common area units are shown below at the same time, so you can compare them at a glance.
  4. Type into any result to convert backwards, then use Copy results – the copied text starts with the heading for your chosen units.

Results update as you type. Everything is calculated in your browser.

How it works

Every area unit is defined by an exact factor relative to the square metre (the base unit). The calculator first turns the value you type into square metres, then turns that into the unit you picked in the “To” menu and into each of the common units below it. This two-step method means any unit can be converted to any other – 16 units are available in each menu – and you can type into any field, including a result, to work in the other direction. Changing a unit menu keeps the quantity the same and just re-expresses it, and the page heading and copied results follow your choice.

How to convert area units

  1. Choose the unit you have in the From menu and type the value, for example 100 m².
  2. Choose the unit you want in the To menu, for example square feet. The page heading changes to “Square Meters to Square Feet Converter”.
  3. The calculator multiplies by the square metre factor of the “from” unit and divides by the factor of the “to” unit: 100 m² × 1 ÷ 0.09290304 = 1,076.391 ft².

What is a square metre?

The square metre is the SI unit of area: a square 1 m on each side. Floor plans, apartment listings and paint coverage are given in m² in most of the world.

What is a square foot?

The square foot is a square 1 ft on each side, exactly 0.09290304 m². U.S., Canadian, UK and South Asian property listings quote floor space in square feet.

What is a square kilometre?

A square kilometre is a million square metres, or 100 hectares. Areas of cities, countries, lakes and national parks are reported in km².

Common mistakes to avoid

Converting area with a length factor (1 m = 3.28 ft, but 1 m² = 10.76 ft², not 3.28 ft²), and assuming regional land units such as marla, bigha or katha have one standard size everywhere.

Formula

1 m² = 10.76391 ft²1 m² = 1 × 10^-6 km²1 m² = 0.0001 ha1 m² = 0.00024710538 acre1 m² = 1,550.0031 in²

Worked example

Inputs — From: 100 m².
Results — To = 1,076.39104167 ft²; Square kilometres = 0.0001 km²; Hectares = 0.01 ha; Acres = 0.02471054 acre; Square inches = 155,000.31000062 in²; Square yards = 119.59900463 yd²; Square miles = 0.00003861 mi².
