Internet plans are sold in megabits per second (Mbps), but download dialogs show megabytes per second (MB/s). Because a byte is 8 bits, a 100 Mbps connection tops out at about 12.5 MB/s before protocol overhead.
How to use the Mbps Calculator
- Pick the unit you are starting from in the From menu and type your value.
- Pick the unit you want in the To menu. The heading changes to match – for example “Megabits per Second to Megabytes per Second Converter”.
- The most common data rate units are shown below at the same time, so you can compare them at a glance.
- Type into any result to convert backwards, then use Copy results – the copied text starts with the heading for your chosen units.
Results update as you type. Everything is calculated in your browser.
How it works
Every data rate unit is defined by an exact factor relative to the bit per second (the base unit). The calculator first turns the value you type into bits per second, then turns that into the unit you picked in the “To” menu and into each of the common units below it. This two-step method means any unit can be converted to any other – 9 units are available in each menu – and you can type into any field, including a result, to work in the other direction. Changing a unit menu keeps the quantity the same and just re-expresses it, and the page heading and copied results follow your choice.
How to convert data rate units
- Choose the unit you have in the From menu and type the value, for example 100 Mbit/s.
- Choose the unit you want in the To menu, for example megabytes per second. The page heading changes to “Megabits per Second to Megabytes per Second Converter”.
- The calculator multiplies by the bit per second factor of the “from” unit and divides by the factor of the “to” unit: 100 Mbit/s × 1,000,000 ÷ 8,000,000 = 12.5 MB/s.

What is a megabit per second?
Megabits per second (Mbps) is the unit internet providers use to sell connection speed. Divide by 8 for megabytes per second.
Common mistakes to avoid
Reading mbps (megabits) as mb/s (megabytes); divide megabits by 8 to get megabytes.
Good to know
The “time to download 1 GB” field assumes the full rate is achieved; real downloads usually take 10–20% longer.
Formula
1 Mbit/s = 0.125 MB/s1 Mbit/s = 1,000 kbit/s1 Mbit/s = 0.001 Gbit/s1 Mbit/s = 125 kB/s1 Mbit/s = 0.000125 GB/sWorked example
Inputs — From: 100 Mbit/s.
Results — To = 12.5 MB/s; Kilobits per second = 100,000 kbit/s; Gigabits per second = 0.1 Gbit/s; Kilobytes per second = 12,500 kB/s; Gigabytes per second = 0.0125 GB/s; Mebibytes per second = 11.92092896 MiB/s; Time to download 1 GB = 1:20.
Frequently asked questions
How many MB/s is 100 Mbps?
12.5 MB/s.
Why is my download slower than my plan?
Plans quote the line rate in bits; overhead, Wi-Fi and server limits reduce real throughput.
Is Mbps the same as MBps?
No. Lower-case b means bits, upper-case B means bytes.
How do I change the units?
Pick any unit in the From and To menus. The value is converted in place, and the heading changes to show your conversion, for example “Megabits per Second to Megabytes per Second Converter”.
Can I type into any field?
Yes. Every field is editable, so you can start from whichever unit you have.
How many units can I convert between?
9 data rate units, from the everyday to the specialised.
Which units are exact?
All factors here are exact by definition except astronomical and similar reference values, which use internationally agreed constants.
What formula does the Mbps Calculator use?
1 Mbit/s = 0.125 MB/s.
