A fraction is in lowest terms when the numerator and denominator have no common factor except 1. Answers are usually expected in lowest terms because they are easiest to read and compare.
How to use the Lowest Term Calculator
- My fraction is in
- Whole number
- Numerator (n)
- Denominator (d)
Everything is calculated in your browser, so results appear instantly and nothing you type is sent to a server.
How it works
Mixed numbers are converted to improper fractions first. The greatest common factor is found with Euclid’s algorithm and both parts are divided by it.
Formula
n/d = (n ÷ GCF) / (d ÷ GCF)
Worked example
Inputs — My fraction is in: Simple fraction; Numerator (n): 24; Denominator (d): 36.
Results — In lowest terms = 2/3; As a mixed number = 2/3; GCF used = 12; Decimal = 0.666666666667; Steps = 1. GCF(24, 36) = 12
2. Divide numerator and denominator by 12: 2/3.
Key terms
- Lowest terms
- A fraction whose numerator and denominator are coprime.
