Multiplying fractions is the easiest fraction operation – no common denominator is needed. It answers questions like “what is half of three quarters?” (1/2 × 3/4 = 3/8).

How it works
Multiply all numerators and all denominators, then divide both by their greatest common factor. Cancelling common factors before multiplying gives the same result with smaller numbers.
Formula
(a/b) × (c/d) × … = (a·c·…) / (b·d·…)
Worked example
Inputs — How many fractions?: 2; Fraction form: Simple fraction; Fraction 1: numerator: 2; Fraction 1: denominator: 3; Fraction 2: numerator: 9; Fraction 2: denominator: 4.
Results — Result = 3/2; Mixed number = 1 1/2; Decimal = 1.5; Steps = 1. Multiply the numerators: 2 × 9 = 18
2. Multiply the denominators: 3 × 4 = 12
3. Simplify: 3/2 = 1 1/2.
