Classroom Spacing Calculator

Quick answer

The classroom spacing calculator estimates how many student desks fit in a room from its seatable length and width, the desk size, the minimum gaps between desks and an optional minimum distance between students, for a rectangular or a staggered (triangular) layout.

Students the room can fit
20
Does the class fit?
No – split the class or find a bigger room
Seats missing
4
Rows of desks
5
Desks per full row
4
Row spacing (centre to centre)
6
Capacity – rectangular grid
20
Capacity – staggered grid
24
Floor area per seat
37.5

Planning a room layout – for exams, for distancing rules or simply for a new class list – comes down to two numbers: how far apart desk centres must be across the room and from front to back. Desks cannot be closer than their own size plus the aisle you want, and if there is a minimum person-to-person distance, the centres must also be at least that far apart.

In a rectangular grid every desk sits directly behind the one in front. In a staggered (triangular) grid every second row shifts sideways by half a desk pitch, so diagonal neighbours are still the required distance apart while the rows themselves move closer together. With a 6-foot distancing rule the staggered layout typically fits 15–20% more students in the same room, at the cost of a slightly harder set-up.

Measure only the area that can hold student desks – leave out the teacher’s zone, doorways, cupboards and the walkway to the exit. Set the distance to 0 if no distancing rule applies; then only the desk size and the gaps decide the layout.

How to use the Classroom Spacing Calculator

  1. Layout
  2. Students in the class
  3. Seatable length (front to back)
  4. Seatable width (side to side)
  5. Desk width (side to side)
  6. Desk depth (front to back)
  7. Minimum gap between desks side to side
  8. Minimum gap between desks front to back
  9. Minimum distance between students (0 = none)

Results update as you type, every field has its own unit menu, and everything is calculated in your browser.

How it works

The calculator works out the centre-to-centre pitch across and front to back, counts how many desks fit in a row and how many rows fit in the room, and for the staggered layout recomputes the row spacing from the diagonal distance and counts the shorter, shifted rows separately.

Worked example

A 30 × 25 ft seatable area, 2 × 1.5 ft desks, gaps of 1 ft (side) and 1.5 ft (front) and a 6 ft distancing rule. Both pitches become 6 ft. Rectangular: ⌊(25 − 2) ÷ 6⌋ + 1 = 4 desks per row and ⌊(30 − 1.5) ÷ 6⌋ + 1 = 5 rows → 20 students. Staggered: rows can be √(6² − 3²) = 5.20 ft apart, giving 6 rows; the shifted rows still hold ⌊(25 − 2 − 3) ÷ 6⌋ + 1 = 4 desks, so 3 × 4 + 3 × 4 = 24 students.

Inputs explained

Field What to enter
Layout Choose one: Rectangular grid, Staggered (triangular) grid
Students in the class A number
Seatable length (front to back) Units: ft, m, in, cm
Seatable width (side to side) Units: ft, m, in, cm
Desk width (side to side) Units: ft, m, in, cm
Desk depth (front to back) Units: ft, m, in, cm
Minimum gap between desks side to side Units: ft, m, in, cm
Minimum gap between desks front to back Units: ft, m, in, cm
Minimum distance between students (0 = none) Units: ft, m, in, cm

What each result means

  • Seats missing = max(0, [Students in the class] – [Students the room can fit])
  • Desks per full row = [Desks per row]
  • Capacity – rectangular grid = [Rows (rectangular grid)]×[Desks per row]
  • Capacity – staggered grid = ceil([Rows (staggered grid)]÷2)×[Desks per row] + floor([Rows (staggered grid)]÷2)×[Desks in shifted rows]

Example values

How the main result changes when Students in the class changes and everything else stays at the example values above:

Students in the class Students the room can fit
12 20
18 20
24 20
30 20
36 20
48 20

Formula

Pitch across = max(desk width + side gap, distance) · pitch back = max(desk depth + front gap, distance) · desks per row = ⌊(W − desk width) ÷ pitch⌋ + 1 · staggered rows: pitch back = max(desk depth + gap, √(distance² − (pitch across ÷ 2)²))

Worked example

Inputs — Layout: Rectangular grid; Students in the class: 24; Seatable length (front to back): 30 ft; Seatable width (side to side): 25 ft; Desk width (side to side): 2 ft; Desk depth (front to back): 1.5 ft; Minimum gap between desks side to side: 1 ft; Minimum gap between desks front to back: 1.5 ft; Minimum distance between students (0 = none): 6 ft.
Results — Students the room can fit = 20; Does the class fit? = No – split the class or find a bigger room; Seats missing = 4; Rows of desks = 5; Desks per full row = 4; Row spacing (centre to centre) = 6 ft; Capacity – rectangular grid = 20; Capacity – staggered grid = 24; Floor area per seat = 37.5 ft².

Key terms

Pitch
Centre-to-centre distance between neighbouring desks.
Rectangular grid
Desks in straight rows and columns.
Staggered (triangular) grid
Alternate rows offset by half a pitch, so neighbours form triangles.

Frequently asked questions

How many students fit in a classroom with 6 feet of distancing?

Roughly one per 36 ft² in a rectangular grid, plus edge effects: a 30 × 25 ft area fits 20 desks in a grid or 24 in a staggered layout.

What is a staggered or triangular layout?

Every second row is shifted half a desk sideways, so the rows can be closer while diagonal neighbours stay far enough apart.

What area should I measure?

Only the seatable area – leave out the teacher's zone, entrances and emergency routes.

What gap do desks normally need?

Common guidance is an aisle of about 0.9 m (3 ft) on main walkways and at least 0.45–0.6 m (1.5–2 ft) between rows for chair space.

How many square feet per student is typical?

Classroom planning guides often assume 20–30 ft² (about 2–3 m²) per student without distancing.

Why does the capacity jump in steps?

Desks come in whole numbers – a room a few inches too short loses a whole row.
