GPA Calculator Pakistan (HEC)

Quick answer

The Pakistan GPA calculator computes your semester GPA and CGPA on the HEC 4.00 scale from letter grades or marks percentages and credit hours, using the grade bands of the Higher Education Commission's uniform semester system, with a 5-point scale option.

Grade as a letter (A, A−, B+ …), marks (78% or 78) or grade points (3.33). Credit hours default to 3.

Universities and degree-awarding institutes in Pakistan grade on the semester system laid down by the Higher Education Commission (HEC). Each course gets a letter grade from its marks – 85% and above is an A, 80–84 an A−, 75–79 a B+, 71–74 a B and so on down to 50–53 for a D; below 50% is an F. The letter carries grade points on a 0.00–4.00 scale, and your GPA is the credit-hour-weighted average of those points.

The HEC policy gives each letter a small range of grade points (A = 3.67–4.00, A− = 3.34–3.66 …) so that universities may “fractionalise” grades by marks. Many universities simply award the top of the band (A = 4.00, A− = 3.66, B+ = 3.33); others interpolate within the band. Choose the option your university uses. A few institutions use a 5-point scale – select it to convert letters on that scale instead.

Type one course per line: course name (optional), letter grade or marks, credit hours. Most theory courses are 3 credit hours and many labs are 1 or 4. Switch on the CGPA option and enter your previous CGPA and total credit hours to update your cumulative grade.

How to use the GPA Calculator Pakistan

  1. Courses – one per line: name, grade or marks, credit hours — Grade as a letter (A, A−, B+ …), marks (78% or 78) or grade points (3.33). Credit hours default to 3.
  2. Grading scale
  3. Grade points for marks
  4. Calculate my CGPA too
  5. Previous CGPA
  6. Previous total credit hours

Everything is calculated in your browser, so results appear instantly and nothing you type is sent to a server.

How it works

Marks are placed in their HEC band, the grade points of each course (top of band or interpolated) are multiplied by the credit hours, and the sum is divided by the total credit hours. For the CGPA, the previous CGPA × previous credit hours is added before dividing by all credit hours.

Worked example

Calculus A (3 cr), Applied Physics B+ (3), Programming A− (4), English B (3), Pakistan Studies B (2). Quality points = 12 + 9.99 + 14.64 + 9 + 6 = 51.63 over 15 credit hours → GPA 3.442. With a previous CGPA of 3.20 over 36 credit hours: CGPA = (51.63 + 115.2) ÷ 51 = 3.271.

HEC grading bands

Marks Letter Grade points (band) Top of band
85 and above A 3.67–4.00 4.00
80–84 A− 3.34–3.66 3.66
75–79 B+ 3.01–3.33 3.33
71–74 B 2.67–3.00 3.00
68–70 B− 2.34–2.66 2.66
64–67 C+ 2.01–2.33 2.33
61–63 C 1.67–2.00 2.00
58–60 C− 1.31–1.66 1.66
54–57 D+ 1.01–1.30 1.30
50–53 D 0.10–1.00 1.00
below 50 F 0.00 0.00

Formula

GPA = Σ(grade points × credit hours) ÷ Σ credit hours · CGPA = (Σ quality points of all semesters) ÷ (all credit hours) · HEC band: A = 85%+, A− = 80–84, B+ = 75–79, B = 71–74 …

Worked example

Inputs — Courses – one per line: name, grade or marks, credit hours: Calculus, A, 3
Applied Physics, B+, 3
Programming Fundamentals, A-, 4
Functional English, B, 3
Pakistan Studies, B, 2; Grading scale: HEC 4.00 scale; Grade points for marks: Top of the HEC band (A = 4.00, A− = 3.66 …); Calculate my CGPA too: Yes; Previous CGPA: 3.2; Previous total credit hours: 36.
Results — Semester GPA = 3.442; CGPA = 3.271; Credit hours this semester = 15; Total credit hours = 51; Quality points this semester = 51.63; Letter grade equivalent of the GPA = A-.

Key terms

Credit hour
One hour of class per week over a semester; most courses are 3 credit hours.
GPA
Grade point average for one semester.
CGPA
Cumulative grade point average over all semesters.
Fractionalised grading
Grade points that vary within a letter band according to the exact marks.

Frequently asked questions

How is GPA calculated in Pakistan?

Multiply each course's grade points by its credit hours, add them, and divide by the total credit hours (HEC uniform semester system).

What marks give an A under HEC?

85% and above. 80–84% is A−, 75–79% B+, 71–74% B, 68–70% B−, 64–67% C+, 61–63% C, 58–60% C−, 54–57% D+, 50–53% D and below 50% F.

How do I calculate CGPA?

Add the quality points of all semesters and divide by all credit hours – or enter your previous CGPA and credit hours here.

How do I convert CGPA to percentage?

There is no single HEC formula; many universities print their own conversion. GPA ÷ 4 × 100 is only a rough indicator (3.44 → 86%).

What CGPA is needed to pass a degree?

Undergraduate programmes usually require a CGPA of at least 2.00, and MS/MPhil programmes 2.50–3.00 – check your university's rules.

What is a good CGPA in Pakistan?

3.0+ is good, 3.5+ is excellent and often needed for merit scholarships and gold medals.

Why are A− points 3.66 and not 3.7?

The HEC band for A− is 3.34–3.66; universities that use the top of the band give 3.66, while some round to 3.67 or 3.7.
