Pizza delivery drivers in the US are often paid close to the tipped minimum wage and use their own cars, so tips make up a large part of their income. The usual guidance is 15–20% of the bill for good service, at least a few dollars on small orders, and a little extra when the weather is bad, the order is large or the drive is long. A delivery fee on the receipt usually goes to the restaurant, not the driver, so it does not replace the tip.
For pickup, tipping is optional; 5–10% is a kind gesture if staff packed a big or complicated order. Eating in follows normal restaurant etiquette – 15–20% for good table service.
The calculator turns these rules of thumb into a concrete amount. You can override it with your own tip in money or percent, then split the total equally or fairly by slices – handy when one person ate five slices and another only two.

How it works
Pick how you get the pizza and rate the service. The service level sets a percentage (20/15/10/0% for delivery and dine-in, 10/5/0/0% for pickup); delivery tips are at least $3 unless the service was very poor, with $2 added for bad weather and $1 for a long drive. Finally the total is divided by people or by slices.
Worked example
Two people order $32 of pizza for delivery with good service: 15% of $32 = $4.80, above the $3 minimum, so the tip is $4.80 and the total $36.80 – $18.40 each. If it is pouring with rain the tip becomes $6.80. Split by slices instead, each of 8 slices costs $4.60, so someone who ate 3 slices pays $13.80.
Tipping guide used
| Service | Delivery / dine-in | Pickup |
|---|---|---|
| Excellent | 20% | 10% |
| Good | 15% | 5% |
| Poor | 10% | 0% |
| Very poor | 0% | 0% |
Delivery: at least $3 (except very poor service), +$2 for bad weather, +$1 for a long or difficult drive.

What each result means
- Total = [Bill (before tip)] + [Tip]
- Cost per person = [Total]÷[Number of people]
- Tip per person = [Tip]÷[Number of people]
- Price per slice (incl. tip) = [Total]÷[Total number of slices]
- You pay = [Slices you ate]×[Total]÷[Total number of slices]
- The others pay (together) = ([Total number of slices] – [Slices you ate])×[Total]÷[Total number of slices]
Formula
Recommended tip = bill × service % (delivery minimum $3) + bad-weather and distance extras · total = bill + tip · per person = total ÷ people · price per slice = total ÷ slices
Worked example

Frequently asked questions
How much should I tip for pizza delivery?
15–20% of the bill for good service, with a minimum of about $3–5 on small orders, plus a little extra in bad weather or for a long drive.
Is the delivery fee a tip?
Usually not. Most delivery fees go to the restaurant to cover costs; check the receipt or ask, and tip the driver separately.
Should I tip for pickup?
It is optional. 5–10% is a nice gesture for a large or complicated order; for a single pizza many people do not tip.
How much to tip on a $20 pizza?
$3–4 for good delivery service (15–20%). Our calculator gives $3 (15%), raised to $5 if it is raining.
Should I tip on the amount before or after tax?
Tipping on the pre-tax bill is standard etiquette; tipping on the total is more generous.
How do I split pizza fairly?
Divide the total (with tip) by the number of slices and pay for the slices you ate. With a $36.80 total and 8 slices each slice costs $4.60.
