Minecraft Pyramid Block Calculator

Quick answer

The pyramid block calculator plans a stepped pyramid in Minecraft: from the base side, the number of tiers or the blocks in your inventory it gives the height, the total blocks (solid or hollow), the blocks in any tier and a chart of the layers.

Tier 1 is the bottom layer.

Total blocks needed
4,495
Base side
29 blocks
Height (tiers)
15 blocks
Top of the pyramid
Single block capstone (odd base)
In stacks
70 stacks + 15 blocks (2.6 shulker boxes of 64-stacks)
Side of the chosen tier
25 blocks
Blocks in the chosen tier
625
Blocks for a solid pyramid (comparison)
4,495
Blocks per tier

A classic Minecraft pyramid steps in by one block on every side for each layer, so each tier is two blocks narrower than the one below. A base of 29 × 29 therefore rises 15 tiers to a single capstone block, while a 30 × 30 base ends in a flat 2 × 2 top after 15 tiers. Choosing an odd base gives the sharp point most builders want.

Pick how you want to plan: start from the base size, from the height (number of tiers) you want, or from the blocks you have and let the calculator find the largest pyramid that fits. A solid pyramid needs the sum of the squares of every tier – it grows very fast – while a hollow shell only needs the outer ring of each layer, which saves most of the material on big builds and leaves room for rooms and tunnels inside.

You also get the side length and block count of any tier you name, the total in stacks of 64, and a bar chart that shows how the layers shrink towards the top.

How to use the Minecraft Pyramid Block Calculator

  1. Plan from
  2. Blocks per side of the base
  3. Number of tiers
  4. Blocks in inventory
  5. Top
  6. Build
  7. Show details for tier number — Tier 1 is the bottom layer.

Everything is calculated in your browser, so results appear instantly and nothing you type is sent to a server.

How it works

Tier sides drop by two each layer. The solid total adds s² for every tier; the hollow total adds the perimeter ring 4s − 4 for every tier except the top, which is solid. In inventory mode the base is increased until the next size would need more blocks than you have.

Worked example

Base 29: tiers have sides 29, 27, 25 … 3, 1 – 15 tiers. Solid total = 29² + 27² + … + 1² = 4,495 blocks (70 stacks and 15 blocks). Tier 3 has side 25 and 625 blocks. A hollow shell uses (4 × 29 − 4) + (4 × 27 − 4) + … + (4 × 3 − 4) + 1 = 841 blocks. With 5,000 blocks in your inventory the largest solid odd-based pyramid has a 29 base.

Solid pyramid sizes

Base Tiers Solid blocks
9 5 165
15 8 680
21 11 1,771
29 15 4,495
41 21 12,341
63 32 43,680

Formula

Tiers = ⌈base ÷ 2⌉ · tier i has side s = base − 2(i − 1) · solid: Σ s² · hollow: Σ (4s − 4) with a solid top · odd base → 1-block capstone, even base → 2 × 2 top

Worked example

Inputs — Plan from: Base side length; Blocks per side of the base: 29; Build: Solid; Show details for tier number: 3.
Results — Total blocks needed = 4,495; Base side = 29 blocks; Height (tiers) = 15 blocks; Top of the pyramid = Single block capstone (odd base); In stacks = 70 stacks + 15 blocks (2.6 shulker boxes of 64-stacks); Side of the chosen tier = 25 blocks.

Key terms

Tier
One horizontal layer of the pyramid.
Capstone
The single block at the very top of an odd-based pyramid.
Hollow shell
Only the outer ring of each tier is built.

Frequently asked questions

How many blocks are in a Minecraft pyramid with a 29-block base?

4,495 for a solid pyramid of 15 tiers; a hollow shell needs 841 blocks.

How tall is a pyramid with a base of b blocks?

⌈b ÷ 2⌉ tiers when each layer steps in one block per side.

Why use an odd base?

It ends in a single capstone block; an even base ends in a 2 × 2 platform.

How much does a hollow pyramid save?

Most of the material: for a 29 base, 841 blocks instead of 4,495 – over 80%.

How do I build the tiers evenly?

Mark the centre of the base, then start each new layer one block in from the edge of the layer below.

How many blocks does tier 3 of a 29 base have?

Its side is 29 − 4 = 25, so 625 blocks if solid.
