Children born in the same calendar year do not always start school together – the deciding factor is the cut-off date of the local school system. In the US each state fixes the date by which a child must be five to enter kindergarten, most often 1 September. In England and Wales a school year contains everyone born from 1 September to 31 August, and children start Reception in the September after they turn four. Northern Ireland uses 1 July as the boundary, and Scotland groups children born from March to the following February, so Scottish pupils start Primary 1 between about 4½ and 5½.

It assumes the child starts on time and never repeats or skips a year.
Parents of summer-born children in England, and of January–February birthdays in Scotland, can often defer entry by a year; US families may delay kindergarten too. Shift every date by one year in that case.

How it works
The calculator compares the birthday with the entry cut-off to find the first school year, then adds the standard number of years to reach each later stage and computes the age on the stage’s start date.
Worked example
A child born on 5 May 2006 in Florida (cut-off 1 September) is 5 before the cut-off in 2011, so kindergarten starts in fall 2011, middle school in fall 2017 and high school in fall 2020, and the child graduates in June 2024. A child born on 15 October 2019 in England turns four after 31 August 2023, so Reception starts in September 2024 and secondary school (Year 7) in September 2031.
