Volunteer organisations – animal-protection groups, food banks, environmental clubs, campaign teams – rely on people who give their time in very different ways. Some sign an online petition now and then; others run events, recruit friends and represent the group in public. Knowing where you are on that path helps you and the organisation decide what to try next.
This self-assessment looks at five dimensions of engagement: how long you have been active, how many ways you take part (online actions, in-person events, skills or office support, fundraising, organising others), how many hours you give in a typical week, how many channels you use to stay in touch with the organisation, and how many of its action areas interest you. Each dimension earns points, and the total out of 100 maps to a profile.
The scoring is our own transparent model rather than an official standard: it rewards breadth and consistency more than raw hours, because organisations depend on volunteers who stay and connect. Use the profile as a conversation starter with your volunteer coordinator, not as a judgement.

How it works
Each answer is converted into points for its dimension (tenure up to 5 years, up to five ways of taking part, five hour bands, up to four channels and up to five cause areas). The points are added and compared with the profile cut-offs: under 30 Emerging, 30–54 Active, 55–77 Engaged, 78+ Volunteer Ambassador.
Worked example
Two years of volunteering (8 points), online actions and in-person events (2 of 5 ways → 10 points), 1–3 hours a week (6.25 points), two connection channels (7.5 points) and two action areas (3.75 points): score = 8 + 10 + 6.25 + 7.5 + 3.75 = 35.5 → Active Volunteer, 19.5 points from Engaged.

| 0–29 | Emerging Volunteer |
| 30–54 | Active Volunteer |
| 55–77 | Engaged Volunteer |
| 78–100 | Volunteer Ambassador |

What each result means
- Engagement score (0–100) = min([How long have you been an active volunteer?], 5)÷5×20 + ([Do you take part in online actions (petitions, sharing campaigns)?] + [Do you take part in in-person events or protests?] + [Do you give skills or admin support (design, translation, office work)?] + [Do you help with fundraising or donation drives?] + [Do you organise or recruit other volunteers?])÷5×25 + ([Hours you volunteer in an average week] – 1)÷4×25 + [How many ways do you stay connected (newsletter, group chat, social media, meetings)?]÷4×15 + ([How many of the organisation’s action areas interest you?] – 1)÷4×15
- Tenure points (of 20) = min([How long have you been an active volunteer?], 5)÷5×20
- Participation points (of 25) = ([Do you take part in online actions (petitions, sharing campaigns)?] + [Do you take part in in-person events or protests?] + [Do you give skills or admin support (design, translation, office work)?] + [Do you help with fundraising or donation drives?] + [Do you organise or recruit other volunteers?])÷5×25
- Time points (of 25) = ([Hours you volunteer in an average week] – 1)÷4×25
- Connection points (of 15) = [How many ways do you stay connected (newsletter, group chat, social media, meetings)?]÷4×15
- Interest points (of 15) = ([How many of the organisation’s action areas interest you?] – 1)÷4×15
Formula
Score (0–100) = tenure (20) + ways of taking part (25) + weekly hours (25) + connection channels (15) + cause areas (15)

Frequently asked questions
What are the four volunteer profiles?
Emerging (getting started), Active (regular but narrow involvement), Engaged (broad, steady involvement) and Volunteer Ambassador (a committed volunteer who also brings others in).
How is the score calculated?
Five dimensions are scored – tenure 20 points, ways of taking part 25, weekly hours 25, connection 15 and interests 15 – and added up to 100.
Do more hours always mean a higher profile?
No – hours are only a quarter of the score; breadth, tenure and connection matter just as much.
How can I move to the next profile?
Try a new way of taking part, such as one event or a skills task – each adds 5 points.
Is this an official assessment?
No, it is a self-reflection tool with an openly documented scoring model.
How many hours do volunteers usually give?
US volunteers average roughly 2–3 hours a week, according to national civic-engagement surveys.
