FFP contains all clotting factors. The usual starting dose of 10–15 mL/kg raises factor levels by about 15–25%. It is used for bleeding with multiple factor deficiencies, massive transfusion and some plasma exchange; for warfarin reversal, prothrombin complex concentrate is preferred.
How to use the Fresh Frozen Plasma Dose Calculator
- Weight
- Dose
- Volume per unit
Results update as you type, and every field accepts the units shown in its menu.
How it works
Enter weight, dose per kg and the volume of a unit at your blood bank. Final dosing is a clinical decision.
Inputs explained
| Field | What to enter |
|---|---|
| Weight | Units: kg, lb, st, g |
| Dose | In mL/kg |
| Volume per unit | In mL |
What each result means
- FFP volume = [Weight]×[Dose]
- Number of units = ceil([FFP volume]÷[Volume per unit])
Example values
How the main result changes when Weight changes and everything else stays at the example values above:
| Weight (kg) | FFP volume (mL) |
|---|---|
| 35 | 525 |
| 52.5 | 788 |
| 70 | 1,050 |
| 87.5 | 1,313 |
| 105 | 1,575 |
| 140 | 2,100 |

Formula
FFP volume (mL) = weight (kg) × dose (mL/kg)
Units = volume ÷ unit volume (about 250 mL)
Worked example
Inputs — Weight: 70 kg; Dose: 15 mL/kg; Volume per unit: 250 mL.
Results — FFP volume = 1,050 mL; Number of units = 5.
Key terms
- FFP
- Fresh frozen plasma.
Frequently asked questions
What is the usual FFP dose?
10–15 mL/kg, up to 20 mL/kg in massive bleeding.
How long does FFP take to thaw?
About 20–30 minutes.
Is FFP used to reverse warfarin?
Prothrombin complex concentrate and vitamin K are preferred where available.
